Let's get this bit out of the way first, my specs:

Windows 7 64 bit
AMD Phenom II 940 (not OC'd anymore)
ATI 5870
4GB RAM

Anything else you need just ask.

So I've been using my system for months now with no problems. Then last night I went on BF:BC2 and I had an error saying PnkBstrB.exe wasn't initialised, and I looked it up and this is a windows 7 problem. But I've never had this problem before so I was confused. Anyway I downloaded the suggested program, ran it, it told me to reboot and when I did Windows no longer works. The program could be unrelated, I'm not sure tbh. Basically when I turn on my PC it boots up, then the taskbar and everything else (except my gadgets?) will crash and the computer can't run a thing. Now and again I get to open Chrome and browse a bit, but it just crashes again. However the system still runs fine in safe mode (which is what I'm using atm) so there still seems hope yet.

I've tried system restoring it to about a week ago, and also uninstalled the said program earlier, and punkbuster along with it. Nothing works, and I'm not sure what to do anymore. I'm tempted to just re-install windows. Any suggestions? I tried to download and run Glary Utilities but that can't install in safe mode it seems, and theres no hope in normal mode!

Help? :(

go to control panel--> windows updates --> update history then go back to the last update. If this works you will need to stop it when it tries to download automatically.

also, try checking windows event viewer which is under the administration set in the control panel (classic view) in administrators tools. Look under window/system it will give you an error code which can then be googled. Hope this may help

the punkbuster thing was a widespread problem a while ago (back in the beta days), but im pretty sure they figured out the solution to that. i remember a temporary fix was disabling any anti virus monitoring programs (worked for me), but this is hardly ideal.

Thanks for the responses guys. I actually fixed the problem... it was Comodo! I had to manually turn off/on all my services allowed in msconfig (leaving out the official windows ones obv, left them on) and after a while it turned out Comodo, my firewall software was making my PC crash! I don't have any idea how to explain this, or if it's related to punkbuster, but it's now uninstalled and my PC is back in fine health :)
