PC wont start after move (dumbfounded)

So plugged it on after move. The motherboard has power lights on but when i hit the power button nothing happens.

Have tried a different power lead, different plug just in case

Have checked that the on switch on the power supply is 1 not 0

The pc was not knocked during the move. Was in the back of a small van for about 4 minutes, didn't move and inch (watched it from the passangers seat, slow drive, very flat, no bumps)

2) I carried it to and from the van at both end of the journey and it was picked up normally and placed down very gently. Only movement really will have been vibration in the van and the slight knock of it being placed on the floor (very slight)

I opened it up and checked all relevant connections (power switch to mobo, main power to mobo, cpu power etc)

Check nothing was displaced at all, cpu, cpu cooler, ram etc. Not even the cables that were loosly held in the case had moved and nothing was even slighly loose.

Checked that there were no loose screws etc or anything like that rattleing about in the case that could have shorted it (I checked this when I built it but though it would re check, nothing wrong here)

As far as I can tell, the case was in no way knocked and the only movement was bwing picked up twice and put down twice gently, nothing is loose at all, the issue IS to do with the pc not the power at the new location in any way or the power lead in any way.

Only oddity I have ever noticed, or about the first 4 - 5 days after building it, when it started it up, the power would come on , fans would spin, leds come on for all for about 1.5 - 2 seconds, then would all go off again for about 2 seconds then start up again normally. Since that first 4 - 5 days period I never noticed it happening again.

Having been looking at the temps a lot (being a new build n all) the hottest it has run is

cpu 68 under load
mobo hottest temp about 55
gpu 90 (but its a 8800gtx, can run this hot witohut issue and has done so fine for over 2 years)

Specs

new components

Intel Core i7 920 D0 Stepping (SLBEJ) 2.66Ghz @ 4.00GHz
Gigabyte EX58-UD5 Intel X58 Motherboard
Patriot Viper 6GB DDR3 PC3-12800C8 1600MHz DDR3
Antec 1200 Twelve Hundred

components I already had (about 2 years old)

BFG 8800gtx
Segate 500gb hdd and 2 x Segate 250gb hdds
dvd drive
BFG 1000watt psu

Conclusions

Either some sort of insain coincidence where the power supply was on its way out and just happen to finally die the first time it was turn on here (I really doubt it)

Or, some internal connection based issue caused by 2 very light pick ups and put downs or 3 - 4 minutes of engine vibration.

I am really confused and amazingly *****d off as it has not been mall treated even slighly and I can find nothing what so ever thats wrong anywhere!!!

Has anyone ever experienced something like this or can think of something I havent checked because I'm done and am seriously confused!

Cheers Guys

Yeah am doing a full rebuild (painful!!!)

I have noticed something odd / interesting / worrying / dangerous?

If I plug the kettle lead into the anti surge extension socket then plug the kettle lead into the psu I get a crackeling sound (has done that since day 1) as I push it in, when I get the crackling the lights in the room flicker, get dimmer and brighter which has never happened anywhere else. It has always had the crackling as you insert the kettlelead, never crackles whilst in or on, just as its making the connection.

ahh thats normal mate :)

Ok so I removed everything from the mobo (all connections, cpu, ram, all cards etc) plugged the mobo power plus power switch and reset switch back in and hooked up the psu. Still getting the same, power reaches the mobo but can't switch it on. No beeps or anything.

Have reaffirmed that there was nothing loose in the case that could have shifted during the move and caused a short and that nothing has been visibly damaged. Still can't see any problem anywhere what so ever.

Only bought and built this rig 21 days ago.

So what would you say I'm left with based on the senario.....

1) Some kind of issue with this houses power (I ran my old rig here with the same psu fine for about 1.5 years, so seems unlikley plus it was surge protected)

2) An issue with the psu, nothings happened to it any seems healthy plus power reaxhes the mobo, so seems unlikly)

3) An issue with the mobo. Seems plausable but nothing has happened to it, nothing hanging on it, touching it, no visible damage, not loose, so whilst plausible given the symptoms there is no causes that I can see

4) Issue with the cases power switch. Seems plausable but again, would take a bit of force to mess that up and it didn't recieve any thuds.

5) Something somewhere totally inaccesable shaken loose? Mobo component, case component, possible but again unlikley.

Not so much ****ed off as I am very confused.

I'm still totally stumped, can see no issue or any cause for any issue.

Cheers Guys

Man that must be very annoying for you.
You could always connect the reset switch to the header for the power button to test or just short the two pins for power switch.
Is there anyone you could borrow a PSU from to test?
You need to try rule out each component so maybe just boot with GFX and one stick of ram.Disconnect everthing else (soundcard, hard drives, etc) and see will it post.
You say your Mobo hottest temp was 55c? where did you get that reading from, bios or software?I use hwmonitor and mine never goes over 42c and that when it under heavy loads.

Ok so

Took the psu out of the case, hooked the 24 pin power plus 8 pin cpu power up to the mobo from my old rig (just the mobo, no cpu or anything hooked up to it then hooked up the power switch from my new case)

I noticed the following. Every, maybe 1 in 15 times I press the power switch the fan on the psu spins up for about 1 - 1.5 seconds, not long enough to hear but you can see it spin for a few revolutions.

I then hooked the psu back up to my new rig, tried the button about 60 - 70 times, with some long intervals sometimes and got nothing.

Hooked it backup to just the old mobo and got the fan to go once, then not again in about 5 mins. Tried adding my old ram and cpu to my old mobo and again got nothing.

So.... what does this tell me?

Could it be?...

My psu is messed up and shorted my new mobo which is why it recieves power but the power switch doesnt do anything cos the mobo is destroyed and so the signal is never sent to the psu from the mobo to turn on

It worked originally intermitantly on my old mobo because though the psu is messed up the mobo was ok so the signal was being sent from the power switch to mobo and from mobo to psu so the psu would manage to try and start sometimes. Now it doesn't because the psu has shafted my old mobo as well?

I might be wrong, are there other ways to read this situation?

Cheers Guys

Borrowed the one from this pc

Problem solved, boots now.

Cheers for the help.

So to clean up the mess, can anyone tell me

1) I am running

Intel Core i7 920 D0 Stepping (SLBEJ) 2.66Ghz @ 4.00GHz
Gigabyte EX58-UD5 Intel X58 Motherboard
Patriot Viper 6GB DDR3 PC3-12800C8 1600MHz DDR3
Antec 1200 Twelve Hundred
Segate 500gb hdd and 2 x Segate 250gb hdds
dvd drive

1000watt was overkill for my old pc and will be for this too. Would people suggest a 850watt psu would do the job including a possible gpu upgrade in future?

I will try and get my 1000watt replaced under warranty and pay for a new 1 in the mean time.

Again thanks for the help, these forums are awesome for responce times!

I run a very similar rig with an 8800gt on a bequiet 650,plus i OC it a lot and its ample for my needs. So a GOOD 850 would still be overkill imo but would leave plenty pf headroom for extra/uprades in the GFX department.

PS. glad to see your sorted now.
