Hi all,

Need a bit of help here! When I press the power button on my PC the LEDs in the fans and the cathodes light up for a split second and then turn off. Other than that, the system does nothing!

AMD Athlon 64 3700+ (Stock HSF)
Asus A8N-SLi Premium
1Gb GeIL RAM
160Gb SATA-II HDD
GeForce/Leadtek 7800GT PCI-E
Hiper 580W PSU
Thermaltake Tsunami Dream

Any help appreciated, thanks,

Jon

Blimey mate, you've got exactly the same problem as me and guess what ...we have the same PSU !
My pc cut out last night whilst I was playing BF2 and it was just as if somebody had kicked out the mains plug except that I still had the green mobo light on. I had to leave it about 5 mins before it would switch on, but before that I had the same symtoms as you, LED's and and fans on for a split second every time I hit the power button.

I really hope it is the PSU and not the mobo , because a PSU would be much easier to replace !!

Thanks for all your replies.

ajm: No, unfortunately I don't. I'll see if I can get hold of one, good idea.

lee87: Done both of these things to no avail. The CPU fan is not spinning - nothing is running whatsoever.

Skeeter: I thought of this, but I assumed it couldn't be because the system did something when the button was pressed (lights flash). A wire either works or it doesn't, and if the wire was broken, not even the lights would turn on.

Thanks again everyone,

Jon

Could be loose tho so can work and not work kinda. I was thinking.

Might be the motherboard shorting on somit perhaps?

Something else you could try is, strip the pc and see if it boots with minimum components if it does and is ok, turn off add somit retest and keep going till you find the problem.

Yep I tried that as well! Had it set up with just CPU, 7800gt, 1 stick of RAM (no HDD or IDE devices) and still exactly the same thing happens.

OCUK apparently do a strip-down/rebuild service for £50, which I may end up doing. I bought the parts from OCUK last week, so everything is under warranty.

Mine has been working OK today, fingers crossed !
I've got another PSU in the loft but it's only a 20 pin connector so I don't know whether it will work on this mobo.
I just wonder whether anybody else has had problems with The Hiper 580.

Tyke... I haven't heard of many people with problems with the Hiper 580W, and looking at the following thread it would seem as if it may be the mobo:

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17535016

Well I might end up just paying the £50 for OCUK to do the strip-down/rebuild service. I bought all the parts from OCUK just last week, so if anything has gone wrong (mobo, PSU etc) they can replace it directly.

yeah, I don't understand it all. Mines been running now for 3 or 4 hours without a power cut. It's back at it's overclock settings and I've been stressing it continuously for the last hour with a graphics demanding game.... and it's rock solid ???

Blimey, what a fool I am. I thought the PSU was OK as I tested it only once in another pc, so I've just RMA'd my mobo.

Done some more tests on the Hiper 580 both in my Wife's and Son's pcs and it's definately that damn PSU at fault . Thats my fault for jumping to conclusions too soon.

Aha. I'll have to get hold of another PSU to test the system with. I'll let you know what happens, but it's gonna be a week or two before I can borrow one...

Thanks mate! I hope it is the PSU, just because it's so much easier to replace!

Now I've got to wait a week or two for a perfectly good mobo to be returned !!

Both my wife and sons pc's have been running fine for ages, when I put the Hiper in them this time, I got exactly the same symptoms : LED's and Fans flashing for a split second.

Trouble is, mine has been an intermittent problem so when I first tested the PSU in another pc it worked fine.

Definitely one of the most annoying problems I've had in a PC! Well that just about definitely isolates it to the PSU.

I see what you mean about the intermittent stuff.

Good luck :)

In most situations that i have seen about pc's not booting it lies at the psu being at fault.I had a similar problem about 6 months ago and i were told by several people on here that it would be my mobo.As my warranty had ran out it had to be a full upgrade only to find out later that it was just a faulty psu.Oh well i have 2 systems now.

my hiper type r gave off a funny smell and stopped working - the light on the back glowed but nothing else worked on the board - it was only 3/12 old so i had it replaced no problems

very annoying, but thankfully not my mobo or ram :)

Just returned my Hiper to the place I bought it and they wanted to test it before giving me a refund. I thought, now he's gonna come back and say 'can't find a problem'.
He came back 10 mins later to say he'd run a test on it and it was extremely faulty with only 2 of the modules having sufficient output.

Changed it for an Enermax 600 w Noisetaker, which I hope will be better.
