PC won't work - I suck

I bet you just need to reset the bios switch on the motherboard which has unknowningly been used before. Find the 2 pins and short them for a second.

+1 clear Cmoss that's what l would do, before anything else if all the cable's are correct and fully down.

Seems it's getting power ok. Only other things I can think of are to try a different memory stick in each of the different sockets and remove and resit the cpu. If your sure you've got all power connections on correct then I can't think of anything else except maybe duff MB or CPU. Double check everything.

check that the power button isnt sticky, i had that happen once; pc would power up for a few seconds then shut down...sticky power button was effectively telling it to turn off.

DO NOT BOOT UP BOARD ON OUTSIDE OF ANTISTATIC BAG.

Rant over. It is conductive. Use a sheet of card or wooden table top, not carpet etc.

Is the fan in the CPU fan or the sys fan connector?

Any cables touching moving fans? i would also think its a connection problem somewhere or cable hitting a fan.

Edit. Just saw the picture, that's a mess hehe. Your ram stick should be in slot 1 surely?

As others have suggested, I would remove and then refit the heatsink on top of the CPU.

The heatsink will need some pressure to be applied to ensure a tight fit. Check the thermal paste on the bottom of the heatsink isn't covered by a piece of plastic (used in transit). If fitted correctly, some of the paste will have been smeared onto the top of the CPU (don't wipe it off).

I couldn't tell from your pic, but do you have sata power going to your HDD? It looks like you just have the data cable connected from the pics?

No sata power to hard drive from your last picture. The cpu fan doesn't look like it's plugged into the sys fan header which is normally at the top right of the cpu socket. put the motherboard on the motherboard box rather than the bag and plug a monitor in to see if anything pops up on the screen

Don't think it would be a grounding issue as power is going through the board for a period of time and then switching off.

Is there anything outputted onto a monitor? Can you get into the BIOS at all?

Ok, lots to response to, which I am super-grateful for.

First up, here's close-ups of the cpu and fan which look to be setup ok:

1. Note on the first image the mobo actually says "CPU_FAN" where the cpu fan plugs into. although it is right next to the sys_fan3

2. Hard drive isn't plugged in on that pic but since then I did plug it back in to same effect

3. I also plugged in all the led, reset cables 2 since the last pic

4. When I get home tonight I will put it on a wooden table and not the anti-static bag - rant appreciated

5. I've tried the ram in all of the slots - slot 1 being furthest away from the cpu

Plan for tonight:

1. Triple-check the cpu is setup correctly

2. Order some new ram to see if that has any effect

3. Try to boot without ram

It's possible the PSU is faulty. Do you have a multimeter to test the voltages it's putting out?

I had a PSU go bad and exhibit the same symptoms. All the rails were putting out good voltages, but the pwr_ok line wasn't so it never instructed the cpu to boot and resulted in all fans going full whack with no display in an endless cycle. Might be worth a check.

Interesting news....

I tested without any ram - same problem. With 2 chips of old ddr3 1g ram - same problem.

So I decided to triple-check the cpu and I noticed some of the pins in the socket seem to be at a different angle to all the others. I tried to take a picture but my phone camera fails on a close up to capture the details.

I'm wondering what this means now? Game over and I broke the motherboard?

As you say, all bar about 8 are pointing outward and downward. a couple are pointing down and left, and a few are pointing up and right.

I've got a camera, so I'll just try and take a picture to show you,

Oh that might mean that you have bent the cpu pins on the cpu, unless you can bend them back into place, you are going to need a new cpu, i don't think you can rma cpu's with bent pins
