As title really, would PC3-8500 DDR3 1066Mhz ram be too slow for an i7 920 ( 1366 ) or i5 950 ( 1156 )?

How much would it affect overclocking?

Very hard to tell really , but in most cases Ram is the significant factor restricting an overclock or causing instability due to an overclock.

It should run but do not expect 4ghz in my view.

Good luck

Thats what i thought, obviously i dont fully understand the how the memory comes into play when overclocking

However id be perfectly happy with 3.4 - 3.6Ghz really

With the CPU and mobo costing upwards of £250 i was hoping to save a bity on the RAM just to get the system up and running. I can get some better stuff then once i sell my S775 stuff and/or the laptop

The lowest available multiplier (that I know of anyway) is x6. So for the standard overclock of 200x20, you want at least 1200mhz ram. Of course it remains that you can generally overclock ram anyway, so it shouldn't limit you.

The 1600mhz is popular because 1600mhz c8 200x20=4ghz are really nice, round numbers. This is using a multiplier one higher than is required though, and since it's triple channel bandwidth is hardly limiting at any speed.

I hope this helps a little

edit: The above is only applicable to the x58 920, don't know what the multi on the p55 chips are

Also remember that socket 1366 & 1156 chips require memory that run's between 1.5v & 1.65v, old style ddr3 runs at higher volts and would possibly damage the cpu's onboard memory controller.
