PCGamer - The best VR headset.

it might be similar in power, but an 1170 isn't going to be an upgrade path for a 1080ti owner is it
it certainly isn't going to be 4x the power

I never said it would be an upgrade to a 1080Ti. I said I would not recommend against buying a 1080Ti while using Volta as an excuse to wait. Similarly, I would not recommend against buying a Rift/Vive now if people want a good, solid, well supported VR experience.

We know MS MR systems have poor tracking in comparison and the Pimax is nowhere near market ready. Not to mention that there is a new version of the Lighthouse system being worked on and of course the replacement for the Vive wands, both of which you would use with the Pimax.

Planned it may be, but when, how much and how good will it be.
Bearing in mind how much hype we see nowadays, I'll believe it when I see it operational, for sale and at a confirmed price.

thats what I'm saying - wait on better info
someone that has already waited 2 years without buying an oculus obviously isn't an early adopter anyway and the rift is still very much an early adopter product not really ready for mainstream use

Strawman. Waiting 2-3 months isnt the same as waiting 2+ years.

I've had both a rift and a vive and a year ago I would have said jump on in. Now is not remotely the same situation.

one year ago, Rift was £600 and touch wasn't available yet, however in the December when it came out, that made the whole package £800. Today it is £399. The point is: £800 it was not filtering into the masses. £399 seems to be the sweet spot, that's getting people interested. The mainstream price atm.
So i see it as jump on it now, as waiting longer means you could possibly be losing time with a great £399 package now with all the support and software proven. Or gamble and pay £399 for headsets that already sound like compromises. Same as rift and vive are both great and have compromises on each other. Another £800 headset, may put people off the current gen, and stagnate sale as the £800 is seen by many as still to high to jump in.

Well I just got one on the MM for £290 inc postage and thought that it was well worth a dip of the toe at that price. Looking forward to having some fun with it. I will therefore be asking loads of Noob questions when it arrives this weekend. You have been warned. LOL :p

Oh is there a thread or place where I can get a 101 on best setup and config for Rift and Rift Store and SteamVR etc.... I dont really want to bore you with all the questions. :)

So since the price of the rift has dropped to £399 I decided to return my vive as it had some issues and go for the rift.
Firs thing I noticed is that there is a lot of image distortion caused by the lenses on the rift that wasn't there on the vive. The sharpness is better on the rift.
Tracking is definitely a lot better on the vive as I could not notice any latency at all and on the rift it's definitely there. It's still great just not as fast as the vive.

The rift has a smaller sweetspot when it comes to positioning of the lenses, if your getting distortion then your not wearing it properly.

Yeah I noticed that the distortion gets better or worse when moving the headset around but it's never perfect.
I'm happy with it still.
Tomorrow im getting third sensor so hopefully tracking will improve as well.
I'm using it on my HTPC which is a mini itx build so hope that all three sensors will work fine connected to the motherboard as add on cards are out of the question.

Nice to hear that Jeff Minter is still around and knocking out games. I met him once at a computer fair. The Guy is an indie legend.

Had dinner with him and Andrew Braybrook (if you remember that name too :) ) back in the early 90s along with the team from Amiga Format. My buddy was doing some freelance writing for them (he now writes for the Times) and I was tagging along.
It was fun dinner.

Ah yes Andrew Braybrook......Uridium springs to mind IIRC. One of the best shooters on the C64. Yes I am an old school-er indeed. I used to know a guy called Bruce Everiss who was at Imagine software...later he went and headed up The All Formats Computer Fairs and did fairs all over the country. Myself and a mate used to do the fairs and build and sell PCs and parts back in the old days when PCs were only just getting the gaming thing going and were still very beige in colour. :p A really good documentary currently on Netflix is 'From Bedrooms to Billions' which documents the rise of the back bedroom coder in the UK. When Bruce Everiss popped up on it I nearly swallowed my spoon when eating. Ha Ha :D
