Hello, everybody , i was just looking for some advice really , i have a mobo that dosent suport pci 2.0 (only 1.1), and i was wondering how much of a performance decrease i would get when running a ati 5850 on my current mobo. If any how much of a drop in fps would i be looking at, and also would i benfit from my current Gpu Ati 5770?:) Thanks.;)

It only really affects the most powerful cards, and even then the performance difference is negligible. You'll be fine.

Most likely, what board is it? Also, what CPU and clock are you running? Might be able to see if that'll be the real bottleneck or not.

What games are you playing too?

Your sig breaks the rules too I think. I'd get yourself acquainted with the FAQ if you're new to OcUK before any mods come through. I'm glad you changed your font too, the first post is awful, and you don't have to end every sentence with a smiley face.

Hello mate thanks for the reply. Yea i'm forum virgin so just getting acquainted with the forum rules. sorry. ill have to read up on them, and also yea ill change my sig, its kina crappy too:). And yea i agree with you the first post looked horrific.lol. Right well for xmas im thinking of buying a intel e8400, i wont be overclocking because my mobo isnt good enough, so i'd rather not. What are you views on using this mobo for the e8400 and the 5850? Oh yea, is the e8400 at stock a powerfull cpu for source games?cheers.

im just mainly playing source games. I.e.:TF2, and css.

thanks.

5850 seems kind of overkill for source games, i would have thought a 5770 would be fast enough as it is. Are your frame rates bad or something?

Well know the 5770 is a great card , its just im a bit of an enthusiast and like to try and upgrade as much as i can. And Know my framerates are quite good.

You might actually be better off with a slower processor and buying a decent 2nd hand board so you can clock it beyond a stock E8400, though the E8400 is a great choice for dual core. It's totally wasted without a clocking board imo. I know that sounds silly buy there's a lot more performance to be had. Source games will be maxed out easily at stock though.

yea icould , but id rather the E8400 so that when i do get round to buying a new system i can swap the cpu over , instead of buying another cpu.And then overclock from there .Btw what would the peformance be like with Applications?

I couldn't say as it really depends on what apps you're using. If you're doing lots of rendering and video editing etc, you might be better off with a quad, but if you're mostly gaming the dual would give better performance.

There was a comparison of PCIe speeds in a Crossfire / SLI setup and it showed minimal difference between the different speeds. Obviously it matters if you're seriously into benchmarking and maxing out your system but for most people they'll never notice the difference. Certainly having the better card will far outweigh the small penalty incurred.
