Wasn't that article before about 1.0/1.1 slots only relevant to crossfire/SLi users, as wasn't it only the secondary slot that could either be 1.1 or 1.0, and the primary slots were all 1.1's.

There was thread on it in here somewhere.

but EVEREST Ultimate Edition 2007 saying they are 1.0.... i also read on amd site somewhere that the 580 north bridge is 1.0 i think...

A quick google reveals some peeps are using 2 x 2900XT's with your mainboard so I can't see why the yet to be release pro's will be any different.

so this mean everybody who as the ati 580x and 480x north bridges will need to upgrade they motherboard because it's only pci-e 1.0a.... to be honest its silly.....

what is the next ati north bridge? and when it be released?

thats how it goes im afraid.

im LUCKY that even my old and fairly cheap mobo is 1.1 (one of the slots at least) (p5ne sli)

I wasn't aware of pcie 1.1 until I read this thread (shocking I know).

How can you tell if your motherboard supports it?

I have an Asus A8N-E, but nowhere on the Asus site can I find mention of 1.1, even for the new motherboards.

The ati site states that 2900 cards only need a 16x pcie connection which is what I have isn't it? Is there a supposed difference between the 2900s and 2950s which would mean 1.1 is essential?

I'm lost as to what the supposed issue is.

Found this on PCI-SIG website

The PCI Express® 1.1 updates include the Base, the Card Electromechanical and the Mini Card Electromechanical specifications. These three specifications have been updated with clarifications and several improvements that reflect the industry’s combined design experience of the past two years. These updated specifications are fully compatible with the PCI Express 1.0a specifications. The PCI-SIG is planning to release complementary PCI Express 1.1 compliance material towards the end of 2005.

PCI-E 2.0 is also backwards compatible, the only differend is that the signal rate doubles.

PCI-E 2.0 is backwards compatible, the only danger is that some manufactures may decide that with a PCI-E 2.0 chipset they can half the number of lanes which service a slot while maintaining the same overall throughput.
This could be used to provide 4 physical x16 slots which are only connected at x8 electrically. Performace would be maintained for PCI-E 2 cards but PCI-E 1.0 cards would run at the same rate they do in todays x8 1.0a/1.1 slots on boards with a nvidia 650i SLI etc.

I can't see this being an issue connections are negotiated a power up so if an existing board has 2x x16 1.0a/1.1 they will run just fine with a x16 PCI-E 2.0 card

I'm sure a PCI-E 2.0 Graphics card will function find in PCI-E 1.1 Slots, I mean the PCI-E freq or 2.0 is 175mhz Vs 100mhz of 1.1 right? if so you can overclock PCI-E freq on most mobos.

so a 2.0 card will work on a pcie 1.0a slot then?
