I have held of from upgrading since my 3700+ and 7800 gtx has been fine until all this crysis and next gen lark. But now these games are being released i figure i should buy a quad core 8800gt and all that. But i fear atthis point in time is not a good time to buy as PCI-E 2 motherboards will start to be released and ddr3 will become more affordable. Dunno what to do!!! :(

Some people are definatly not going to be able to offord the technology they are pushing out now. The main items are going to be £200 a piece (motherboard, power supply, graphics, memory) Thats 1k alone! without the extras.

Graphical processing is unreal.

You don't need a PCI-e 2.0 mobo. You can use PCI-e 2.0 cards in older motherboards and you can use older cards on PCI-e 2.0 motherboards. Don't worry about it.

Not if your gunna get top end stuff (DDR3, PCI-E 2, X38 motherboard, C2D, ATI x3800 Series, High end PS), You add up the top of top componants together and see what you get.

Now you play Crysis or something on a low end C2D or a low endish build and you will find it will lag or won't use high settings with low FPS.

It comes down to how badly you want to run new games.....thats the question of truth really.
If your honest with yourself, your current set up will cope with everything bar new games.

Im in the same boat and its tricky because every major component is in a state of evolution at the moment, I dont think theres any one "core" component you could buy today that wont be superceeded in a matter of 3-4 months....
ddr3, new procesors, new graphics and new mobo tech.....

AS some people say on these boards, the only sensible thing to do, is when you current rig becomes to compromised to enjoy, save up a grand and just buy the best that you can at the time, youl just have to live with the fact it will only be state of the art for a few short months.

Im currently building a system(see sig) , of which ive only got the base components which are unlikely to change anytime soon, and in a bizare twist of fate, ive run out of dosh with other commitments, so I wont be able to buy the rest till feb/march next year....
hopefully the market will be a bit more settled by then so it might be a good thing that im being forced to wait, and ill be able to have more confidence in the lifespan of the components......i hope....

Worst case scenario, it will be just as bad as it is now, and ill just have to buy whats hot at the time and make it last as long as poss.

of course theres the other philosophy, of buying midrange components that are significantly cheaper, which makes upgraging/replacing parts much less heart ache, especially when you consider that todays high-end components will be mid range in a very short time.

I dont think there is a best answer, you just hae to buy what you can afford, when you need it, and make it last.

oh rubbish. we're overclockers, we specialise in buying lower end gear and clocking the nuts off it. £60 get's you 4gb of pc6400. £80 just about get's you 4gb of pc8200. a 600w psu would set you back £100, top flight motherboards are around the 130-150 mark (and i wont include obviously overpriced editions like the maximus). you dont need to spend that much any more.

*cyber high five*

thats what i mean. im buying an e2180 a gig ds3r mobo 4gb geil pc6400 a 600w psu an 8800gt (if there is ever any of the 256mb in stock) an antec 900 and a thermalright ultra 120 and i havnt broken the 500 mark yet

I guess my main fear now is that if i buy an X38 board, will nvidia release motherboards that are far better. I know these x38 motherboards are crossfire ones. Can you still run a single nvidia card ok of it?

I see it as having 3 choices.

Option 1

Buy nothing and wait till next year for updates such as Intel's penryn, nvidia's 8900 and their chipset and more DDR3 modules.

cons - Cant play the letest stuff now with most of my gifts going to be games this sucks.

Option 2

Buy a cheaper DDR2 680i system.

Pros - Cheap Cons - No future proofing

Option 3

Buy X38, 8800GT and DDR3 memory.

Pros - Penryn compatibility, PCI-E 2.0, DDR 3 Cons - Expensive more?

But it has always been like that, if you want the very best/latest then you pay the premium. The difference is now that low-mid range hardware is so much more capable and can quite easily run anything that any ordinary user would require beyond the most power-hungry games.

As for whether to go mid-range or top-end, it rather depends on your budget and upgrading habits. So far I've known that my computers would have to last me a few years apiece so I've 'over-built' slightly at the time of building but a more cost effective option (and the one I'd usually advise) is to buy a cheaper one and put money aside for upgrades as and when necessary. :)
