PCI-E 2x 16X not many about?

Hi all,

i'm looking for a Ivy bridge board. how comes a large majority of boards even the ASUS MAXIUMUS only has 1 x16 PCI-E and rest at 8x

last time i bought a PC was I7 Nehlam and they were everywhere.

Can anyone tell me why loads of boards do not have 2x 16?:eek:

There is very little performance difference, I wouldn't worry about it! Especially considering Ivy Bridge is PCIe 3.0, so has double the bandwidth of PCIe 2.0, so you are getting the same bandwidth with PCIe 3.0 8x as you were with PCIe 2.0 16x (as long as you are using PCIe 3.0 cards obviously).

As it is only the Enthusiast boards tend to come with x16/x16 options, I think you need to be looking at the high end Asus/Gigabyte/MSi motherboards on Z77 to get that. Even then you may be limited on some boards to x8/x8 when in dual card.

Tbh though the difference between PCIE 3.0 @ x16 and PCIE 3.0 @ x8 is minimal at the moment, over two cards you'd drop a few frames at the very most.

x16/x16 isn't possible with IvyBridge unless a PCI-E bridge chip is added and you only find these on higher end motherboards.

There simply aren't enough PCI-E lanes available without a bridge chip.
