Just wondering what's this for and what's the max no i ca do? At the moment i set mine to 101 as i read from a lot of OC-ing guides.

Thanks

Basically, it's the speed the PCIe bus runs at. It's 100MHz at stock, and you can get some benefit by increasing the speed, as it increases the bandwidth available for the graphics card, but the SATA bus speed is tied to the PCIe speed, so you start to get HDD errors if you go too high. I usually run somewhere between 110 and 120MHz.

Oh i see....

So is it just like FSB for CPU but for graphic card?

So for example i would be able to OC my 4870 more without getting artefact if i put it up to 110? Do i need to increase voltage for this as well?

i run at 110mhz also, you might notice a slight fps increase, i wouldnt reccomend going above what WJA96 said, 120mhz, most people leave it at 100mhz - its up to you

I would quite happily run over 120MHz if I could, it's simply not stable:(

I think I once built a system with a PATA HDD in it so I could see how far I could go on a machine with no PCIe lock - 130MHz I think. I'll have a search and see if I can find it.

As well as HDD errors, I read somewhere that you GPU's could die as well. Don't know if this is true though.

I found that thread - it was in the SFF forum and we were all bitching about how there were no decent overclocking mATX boards for Conroes:rolleyes:

Anyway - I managed to get it to run stable with a graphics card at 420FSB which is equivalent to a PCIe speed of over 150MHz, so it is possible.

8th October 2006 - how time flies:)

I set it to 110 and restart it my pc and nothing happen, didn't even boot up at all. So turn it off by pressing the power button for a few second and then all my OC reset to original setting? Do i need to apply voltage for this?

yeah, i heard that too which is why i wouldnt go over 120mhz - i actually have mine at 110mhz, but as i said before, most leave it at 100mhz

i generally find you can go to 1.56v for the Northbridge, as long as you have adequate cooling i,e heatpipe, good airflow etc.

You should be fine setting it to 1.4v or something

thought i would throw in my findings

With an ATI Card, pci-e bus upto 110mhz was fine. tested with 3870/3870x2/4870/4870x2

With an Nvidia 295gtx my pc crashes with anything above 105mhz this also stood for my old 8800GTS 640mb varient.

On an asus p6t oc palm, with i7 920 @ 4ghz.

May help someone out.

willy..

you should be fine up to 1.56v yes, but to be honest ive never had to go this high on my overclock, infact i think my overclock now has the NB set to something like 1.42v or something, obviously you may need to incresae this if you are wanting higher then 3.8ghz.

Datamonkey..

To be honest i think its best leaving it at 100mhz which is what ive done now, only because my gfx card warranty is void - it can mess your gfx card up and as WJA96 said, you can get hard drive errors from it - which im guessing could result in data loss.

So i would set the NB to something like 1.42v-1.56v and leave the pci-e at a 100mhz, its not going to give you a 50% increase like overclocking your cpu, and if you want your gfx card faster, use riva tuner;)
