PCI Express 2.0 question

Really tempted by the 280gtx, however my mobo doesnt support pci-e 2.0. Will this effect the performance i will get from the card, if so by how much.

My current mobo is a asus p5n32-e sli plus, was hoping to get another year out of it before upgrading.

So your saying normal pci-e is faster then the 2.0 version ?

I assumed pci-e 2.0 been newer it would be better and faster. I have looked around the web and not got any answers yet. I read that pci-e 2.0 was faster at sending data and such so again i assumed it was was faster and better.

I am confused :confused:

It is. He wasn't saying that.

A pci-e 1 16x slot has 2.5Gb of bandwidth. a 16x pci-e 2 slot has double the bandwidth of 5gb/sec.

He was saying that he wasn't aware of a card using all the bandwidth of a pci-e 1 slot yet.

I suppose you are going to have to wait until a review site posts results with a pci-e 1 slot (AFIK all the reviews are with pci-e 2 slots) or another poster on here buys one.

Expensive card if it is limited with your board unless you use the distance selling act and risk it.

Yep it's right. Just because the pci-e 2 has double the bandwidth, doesn't mean double the performance. In fact, if the card isn't limited in bandwidth in the pci-e 1 slot then there will be no performance increase going to pci-e 2 slots.

For example, using your 14% you might have this situation.

Say a gpu needs 2.85Gb/s of bandwidth therefore in a pci-e 1 slot running at 2.5Gb/s it is restricted.

In a pci-e 2 slot it will have the full 2.85Gb/s of bandwidth needed and hence runs 14% quicker.

If you had a card which needed 5Gb/s of bandwidth then the performance in a pci-e 2 slot would be 100% more than a pci-e 1 slot.

EDIT: Just on a side note, pci-e 3 slots come out next year offering double the bandwidth over pci-e 2 slots ie 10gb/s. Although again backwards compatible, I'm guessing graphics cards are becoming more and more demanding and this will become more and more of an issue especially with ATI and Nvidia's next next-gen cards.

Ohhhh ok, i see now. So a 280 gtx would use all the bandwith of a pci-e 1 slot ? thats why the extra bandwidth of the 2.0 slot is needed i guess.

So how much performance would i lose using the card in the pci-e 1 slot. Would a a 260gtx be better suited to a pci-e 1 slot.

Sorry for all the questions i just wanna be sure what i am getting before i folk out the money :) I really dont wanna have to upgrade my motherboard as well as the graphics card. I think my mobo is pretty decent and as i said i want another year out of it !

Like I have said above, you need to wait for either a review testing on pci-e 1 boards or another person on here who has taken the plunge.

I've taken the plunge :) I'm not bothered if its slightly limited, because its still going to be WAY better than my x1600xt
 
Apparently the 4850 has a bandwidth of 64Gb/s and the 4870 is to have 115.2GB/s, so still well within pci-e1 of 250Gb/s that's if they are the same thing, might need someone that actually knows what there on about to read the article sauce

I hope that it isn't limited. I would hate for you to have spent £400 which due to been bandwidth limited only gives the performance of a 9800GTX which costs half the money :(

ALthough it will, without doubt, still be a major step up from your x1600xt :D

Memory bandwidth is not the same as pci bandwidth.

You try finding the pci-e bandwidth figures on cards? I know cause I have searched the internet for ages.

I found a review once which showed a x9150pro needing about 1.6Gb/sec but no info on any newer cards.
 
hmmm getting confused now as some say the 4850 will work with a 1.0a and some say not :confused:this is only reason i havent brought one yet as i dont want too shell out my cash to find it dont work.
