PCI Express power problem.

Hey guys!

Right, i bought this PSU a few months back, its a modular one, and it comes with a plug which comes from the psu and it has a PCI-E cable on the other end but....The plug wont fit my card, the middle top pin should be rounded, not square. Now i have an adaptor which is 2 molex's to 1 PCI-E and this fits, but this is really annoying because i need those other molex's to power my 2nd dvd drive and front lights.

My question is, is is possible to swap the plastic plug to make the cable which comes directly from the psu fit into my GFX card? Or would it be much harder?.

I only have basic tools like screwdrivers, pliers and whatnot; nothing specialist. I can get hold of my mates soldering iron if thats needed.

Thanks, :D

No, its definitely wrong, it seems to a manufacturing fault. There are small notches on the offending pin, it just hasnt been cut. I dont really want to return the whole psu just for one cable and i cant find another replacement cable. Can i remove the cap or cut the ends of each and solder/tape the wires back together? :p

Thanks, :D

I had this problem last year when I first got a gfx card that required this connector and my PSU didn't have one.

So I went to a local store and bought a PCI-e power connector/convertor (molex to pci-e)

And it was exactly the same problem as you posted, so I cut the plastic and made it fit, and lo and behold it didn't work at all, so I had to go out and buy a new PSU from the local shop for over the odds just to get a GF 7600 to work :(

So you didn't just buy a new pcie cable for a few penuts which they cost?

YOu could just ring up the company and say look this is what i got and take a pic of it and they will probably send you a new one.

What colour are the wires on the 6 pin connector? Should be 2 yellows and 3 black, is that what you have?

If that's what you have then you could use a craft knife to cut the corners off the middle square but I'd check the wires first.

Not just you mate, had this same problem myself about six months ago... silly us for thinking there is only one standard standard

But yeah a converter although messy and more cables should see you right, they still send out GFX cards with the adaptor included?
