Hello all,

My Hard Drive died on my PC. I do not have any SATA conectivity on the Mobo, but would like to take advantage of the SATA drives, and i can get large drives quite cheap!

How much performance hit will i take running this through a sata card?

I could upgrade the mobo too, but i think things could get expensive quite quickly.

Cheers

Andy

Welcome to the forums, are you running much else on the PCI bus? If not then you should be fine to use a PCI SATA card as a 'stop-gap' until you need/want to make a full upgrade to your PC. The main issue would be the bandwidth available on the PCI bus, it is easily enough if unloaded to satify most SATA drives (at least in SATA I mode if not SATA II) but it gets more complicated if you have a lot of add-in PCI cards. :)

Thanks,

Yes, i was planning to get a TV card and start recording. This doesn't sound like the way to go about it.

Bit of a shame, this is a two year old Sony Vaio, and i was hoping to upgrade the drives, but no SATA. Just stick to IDE drives then?

Cheers
