Hi

I installed the R9 270x into the 2011 Maximus iv extreme z motherboard and it failed to work ( fans did spin, but no image on screen ) .

Then I put in a rubbish 9500GT and it worked.

Take it I can't use a PCIe 3.0 cards in the Maximus

Just rubbish cards with less power than r270x

Only reason I asked my previous motherboard 2009 gigabyte GAMA78GDS3H supported the r270x

Your 9500GT is likely powered by the slot, the 270x will need additional power in the form of a connection to your PSU. without these the card won’t receive enough power and won’t work.

Many many thanks for the replies

Yes I did connect the 6 pin power connection of the r270x, fans spin but no image.

Also

It doesn't say anywhere if Maximus iv extreme z Bios updates support PCIe 3.0

I've checked the BIOS and it's ver 3203 2012/03/16

and there is 5 BIOs updates

Version 3304 2012/05/09
Version 3402 2012/06/13
Version 3501 2012/07/27
Version 3510 2012/09/29
Version 3603 2012/11/27

Do I need to install all these or can I just update straight to 3603

If it doesn't say anything about updating to previous versions on the 3603 then just go straight to it, strange that the fans span though, does/did you put the power connector onto the 270x?
