PCIE Gen 4 vs Gen 3, is there any difference?

Well it depends on what you play

Using the RTX3090, CSGO did produce 42% higher minimum framerate with Gen 4 over Gen 3 - but everything else tested Gen 4 won by just a couple frames in the minimum and averages.

So Gen 4 isn't really worth it if you're an average gamer, stick to your old Gen 3 board.

But for people who like really high framerates well north of 100fps - Gen 4 appears to produce solid improvements, especially in minimums which is great for shooting games.

And FYI: Gen 5 is coming in 2022, not that it's expected to make any difference what so ever for GPU performance so no need to worry about it.

My uniengine heaven 1080p scores results went up after enabling PCIE-4 - so if your a little short of other scores this may be why

Just watched the video and it is total garbage.

There is so much they have deliberately left out that would really show the differences.

Linus is a complete £$%^ and should not be taken seriously.

Quick question... my Z490 is 'pcie 4.0 ready'.... so if i bung in an Intel 11xxx when available and maybe do a bios update i'll be sorted?
Oh, and resize BAR.... will it benefit from pcie 4.0?
Thanks :)

in theory yes aslong as intel dont pull any intel moves to increase sales for z590 :D

I'm sure by the time people do their 3rd GPU upgrade in 7 years time, they'll be pleased they bought a gen 4 board, all those years ago.

I'd never expect to see an advantage in the first year. Some people keep their motherboard for 10 years. That's what people forget when they say today's GPUs don't fully saturate gen3.

It really depends on the game. I watched a benchmark video other day with 6600xt pcie 3 vs 4 and some games showed some nice gains other even.
End of the day its a plus either way you look at it if you got it run it.

The biggest difference I can see is that PCI-E 4.0 has re-introduced horrible chipset fans that will die or become insanely loud long before the motherboard dies.
