PCIe riser/extension block?

Hi,

Does anybody whether there is such a thing as a pcie slot extension/adapter?

Basically, I would like to install my asus xonar in the top pcie 1x slot on my p5q board, but its a little too long and catches on the memory. If it was lifted about an inch it would fit fine, and since I don't use the top two connections on the rear currently the fact they would not be accessible on the rear face plate is not an issue.

I currently have it installed in the bottom pcie x16 slot, but this would not be useable if I got a 2nd gfx card in crossfire.

Would this effect the board/card at all?

Nevermind - answered my own question. Yes, you can get them :-

.....just need to find a good quality one in the uk, and not some low quality rubbish from hong kong. :(

I think they're made for those using 90 degree adaptors to mount cards in low profile cases (HTPC and the like). Are you sure the top two ports you can't use won't foul on the part where the card would normally screw down? Also, how will you fix the card into the slot if it's now 1cm above the screw-hole?
 
I've been thinking about a Xonar DX and have come accross the same issue. My highest PCI-E x1 slot seems to be obstructed by the NB cooler which renders it pointless. I've been wondering if there was anything like this about.

Well, the top edge of the backplate hole is cut back, so there is clearance when you slot a card straight in vertically - so can't see anything fouling.

I also have plenty of the correct thread extension blocks in my spares (similar if not the same as motherboard stand offs) to allow the card to be screwed down at the back.

Alternatively I could simply revert back to on board audio, but it's a waste having a decent sound card and not being able to use it. :(
 
If the spacers are the same length as the riser card lifts it, then go for it :)

Well, I have various lengths, and if it comes down to it a few extra washers and/or longer bolts anyway. I don't like leaving things loose in my case... :D

Just need to track one down now, as in post #2. May take pics etc once done - but no idea when that will be.
 
Well, bought a couple of these (do a search for "pcie extension"), and have successfully fitted one on my board. It raised the card about 1-2mm above the memory dimms - a close fit!

Three motherboard header bolts (which came with the case I'm using) screwed together made just the right length extension to allow me to fasten the card to the backplane.

Everything all up and running fine. All I need now is a 2nd GFX card.. :D
 
It would be nice if they made some completely flexable ones. That way I could put one in the bottom, partly covered PCI slot om my MATX and screw the card into the bottom slot!

Actually, they do. :D Some rather dodgy looking ones floating around though, using the boards from the one pictured and standard ribbon cable soldered directly onto the edge connectors, then covered in what looks like electrical tape. :eek:

The professional ones use custom board and shielded cabling. The pie 1x version of the pcie 16x cables used in that gpu powerhouse box using 6 or 7 nvidia cards, for some university project... :D

thats where i got the site. if you send a e0mail to the people that made that 7 nvidia card set-up and ask them they will e-mail you back where they got them from

unbelievably they are made and sold in the uk

looking for the place now
 
Yup - think I found that on my searches too. Proper decent boards, with an appropriate price - still, you get what you pay for!

Here's what appears to be a better quality one, and available in lengths up to 30 cm's apparently. :eek: Would like to know exactly how its connected under that plastic strip though...

The higher quality ones seem to use ribbon cables with connectors on the ends, using custom boards with pins/sockets attached. Far more secure and adaptable.
 
Sorry for revival, but does anyone know where you can get some of these better quality ones? They're not on OCUK, so a hint should be ok! ;)
