Does lightning have the ability to kill your computer?

Back in 2004 when I first got my current pc, it got fried during a thunderstorm.

What I wanted to know is it safe to use a computer during thunderstorms?

That's answered my question.

I did have a surge protector when my pc got fried, so I thought it was the phone cable that caused it. Interesting that it wont protect the pc against lightning.

Why would only my computer be effected? everything else in the house was fine, including the phones.
