I am looking into getting a PDA shortly but seeing as I have never owned one and rarely use them my overall knowledge is pretty much nill.

The main reason I am getting one is for my final year research project / dissertation - it basically involves developing programs to help speed up engineering tasks in the field. Another reason is I just like my toys :D and have been wanting an excuse to get one for ages!

The only features I can think of so far:
- WLAN / Wi-Fi capable
- Decent screen size
- Bright screen (readable outside)

I haven't got a clue about the different OS's and a bit of research seems to suggest that it's pretty much down to user preference, like Mac OS vs. MS Windows -- I could, of course, be totally wrong.

I am only looking to spend upto £300 - the less the better, but I don't want to miss out on features or function just for the sake of a price tag.

Can you guys suggest any PDA's or links to articles etc giving decent information about the choice of PDA's, usage, developing programs for the PDA etc etc?

iPAQ hc 214 is pretty good. WiFi g, bluetooth, 4" VGA display, the fastest Marvell processor. Plenty of memory, HDCP compatible (would take all new high capacity SD cards) etc.

Very nice purchase, I think it could be found at around £ 200 mark (even less).

hey, thanks for the suggestions - I'll take a look at the forums and the iPaq

One other feature I have just realised I would like is TomTom Navigator or similar - but I think that's usable on pretty much all modern PDA's isn't it?

Edit: Also, I'm not really looking for a smart phone.

This one is not a smart phone:).

Nowadays every decent iPAQ has bluetooth so TomTom is not a problem with bluetooth based GPS receiver. I am using a hx4700 and its 4" display and bright VGA colours do the job perfectly well.

Yeah, I know :)

I was just clarifying that I am just after a PDA and don't really want to wander into smart phone territory - I currently use a W890i and I am quite happy with it :D and I'm not looking into having an N95 or similar (far to big and bulky for my tastes)!
