PDA USB devices and Software Compatability

I'm trying to design and build some Geophysical testing equipment and have a few questions.

I've been working on some USB analogue to digital signal converters (taking the analogue signal from an accelerometer and converting it to a useable data format - all that done by the drivers that I don't have to know too much about) plugged into a laptop.

I have never played with the software side of PDAs much and am completely unfamiliar with the latest generation so my questions are:

- What is the OS software like in compatability with Windows software? I want to run some Windows software that wants to connect with a COM port.

- How do they handle COM ports and do they come with physical USB ports (surely they must do but I have to ask...)
(just checked the Dell website and found that they do have USB ports - hoorah!)

- What is the rough power consumption (in mA) and what is the rating of the batteries on average (in mAH)

If I have been too vague let me know

Ta!

also as far as i know the usb on a pda is for syncing or charging, not for external devices.

My fujitsu siemens n520 picks up hard drives/usb sticks etc with an optional sync cable which also has a usb socket.

Would be easier for the op to get an umpc or eeepc with windows installed as all the software would work etc while maintaining a compact device.

Hmm, there must be some PDAs or PDA plus portable cradle (ala British Transport fare Nazis) which would allow me to use a USB device!?

It scuppers some of my plans but from what I've seen I should just be able to rewrite any required software for the PDA in VB - is this so?
