Hey all,

Thinking of visiting the peak district with my Mrs in a few weeks. Sounds romantic to me :)

can anyone recommend a place to stay? We'd love to stay in a place where we could make our own food.

Might sound stupid to some but is there actually places to buy food from and or eat out as well?

Peak District is a large area, where are you thinking of visiting?

I live about 10 miles from Matlock (worked there for about 10 years as well) so have been to most of the towns.

thanks Siliconslave but the mrs might not like that idea :(

Maundie - not so sure - which place is the vibrant part? we'd love to be able to drive through and or walk through to explore the lovely green area etc

we were thinking either the peak or the lake -
but the lake is further from us for sure peak is closer
coming from down south :)

I lived for a year in Derby, and spent quite some time in the Peak District at weekends. It isn't a very nice place at all, and I certainly wouldn't recommend it for a romantic getaway.

Where down south are you from? Get yourself to Dorset; terrific place, particularly in the summer. Hire a boat and head for the open sea! Or down round Cornwall. If you're intent on heading north, it really is worth the extra effort to make it to the Lake District.

I live in chesterfield, always have done pretty much.

Chatsworth is lovely, as is bakewell, buxton, baslow, ashford in the water, look for places like monsal head to go a walk, chatworth has great views, as does curbar edge/gap. Ladybower reservoir is amazing and that is where they practiced the dam busters from.

Matlock is lovely and so is matlock bath, matlock bath is like blackpool in a way, has illumintations during the summer and you walk along the front, river one side, arcades and small shops and fish and chip shops on the other. Some cable car rides there as well called the heights of abraham.

If you are into cycling, there is a lot of cycle paths around. including the hartington trail. Dovedale stepping stones, robin hoods leap, hermits cave (which has a carved sculpture inside the cave of jesus)

Some lovely church's and small villages in the area as well if you like those sort of things.

Check out Eyam, where the black plaque ended (or started) i forget.

You have castleton and Hathersage, some great caverns and breath taking views up there. Especially winnets pass. (just google that). In Hathersage you also have little johns grave.

So much. but I hope this helps a little.

Self catering accomondation isn't usually that common in these types of places, specially for two people. It tends to be an entire house and they'll want to let it out for a minimum period of occupancy (maybe a week rather than a weekend).

Your best bet if you do want that is to find the available places first then narrow down your search for where you want to stay based on that availability.
