Inspired by the war gamers thread i thought I'd ask are there any pen and paper RPGers past or present on these boards? I was introduced to Vampire the Masqurade and D&D 3.5 about 3 years ago and loved it. Cyberpunk 2020 is also another favorite. Never had the wish to LARP as thats taking it a bit far IMHO.

I used to play Shadowrun and Heavy Gear, I liked them. I still dig out the Heavy Gear book for the artwork sometimes. The Shadowrun universe is great too actually, the fiction's very good.

*cough*
I might have been known to play...
Werewolf
Ars Magica
Starwars
Toon
AD&D
Megatraveller
and some we just kind of made up.

I will of course deny it all!!!

OK I Guess I'll have to fess up....

Used to play AD&D at Uni, followed by about 10 years of weekly sessions playing everthing from superheroes to vampire the masquarade (my fave) Ars Magica (also a close fave to VtM) to MERP.

Now in Wilts far away from buddies who used to play, so if anyone wants to set up a group post here/email in trust.

i play a Warhammer RPG with my friends. obviously, the GM has a ginger Afro!

I was introduced to rpg's through the Final Fantasy series of books at school, then one of my mates bought Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay as our first "serious" game. We played a mixture of games like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Palladium system), D&D, Robotech, Call of Cthulhu (my favourite in 1920's era), Star Wars (West End Games d6), Cyberpunk 2020 (preferred it to Shadowrun) and Stormbringer.

Joined my works local student gaming society and tried a variety of games like Vampire the Masquerade, more D&D, Heavy Gear, MechWarrior, Aeon Trinity, MegaTraveller, Exalted, and SLA Industries.

Haven't gamed in the last year or two much other than the odd Ratkin session.

Got to love playing nosferatu.... played a bit of Vampire... but ended up more of a werewolf fan out of the WOD games.

"Well let me see... if it's heads you die... and if it's tails... I let you go. Or is it the other way around..." *Said With drool and in a slightly high pitched manic tone*

/edit And starwars can ONLY be played with d6!! although you need bucket loads of them mind when you start burning lots of force points...

I've always been fascinated by these games because I have heard the "folklore" around them but never actually played one.

Do you actually have to get into the role of your character and kind of "act" or do you just play these games as you would any other tabletop game?

*raises hand*

currently just starting a Rifts game, along with our long running (very long running) buffy based one (currently 6 years and counting) Have played most games in the past too, as well as being involved in long running forum based rpg's on the net :)

Its up to you and the GM. I love to get into my vampire characters as VtM is heavy on the role play but others can be just like a table top with lots more options to do anything realy. IMHO it should be just like telling a story with the players playing the leads and the GM taking control of the other parts and the rules take care of the physics and metaphysics of the setting.

I'd never be as geeky as actually dressing up and stuff, not even as a kid, but the board game/paper game kinda thing I enjoyed :)

To be honest it all depends on the people you play with. I always tried to make my charecter behave in a way consistant with who he/she was. But I always felt silly if I started to use a voice or the first person. It was always 'Deckard will...' not 'I will'....

Umm it really depends. The way to get the best out of them is at least try and think about what your character would do. Not what you think would be best for your character. If you are playing a character that's dumb but strong play it like that. If they are mad... like a Nosferatu vampire.. then play them like that!

/edit Umm as I am the third person to write more or less the same thing... figure that might just be a sore point among gamers? :p

I created my own system and campaign world which was going to be published if I met some fairly demanding refinement requirements, but never got around to doing much of what they wanted, and I grew out of it all in my late teens.

Vet of D&D 2nd edition (not keen on 3rd) but still play Shadowrun, call of cthulhu, Paranoia and occasionally WoD (mage, hunter and ... vampire (not keen on vamp))

Just ordered the 4th edition of Shadowrun which should be nice when I collect it :D

I played pen and paper RPG's many years ago, mainly Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay and D&D. This was about 15 or so years ago.
