Penalty points?

It's 3 years but they stay on your licence for 4 years for totting up purposes...whatever that means.

Its the other way round they are on your license for 4 years however are only valid for totting up purposes for 3 years. Totting up is when you hit 12 points you are put forward for a 6 month ban usually unless you can come up with a hardship case.

It would appear you are correct...and thinking about it, it does make sense that way around.

I just renewed my insuarance and asked whether it made a difference that three were due to come off in January, he said that they'd be on their for four years and that I have to declare them for five years for insurance purposes.

I suppose the three years for totting up is the only important number here.

5 on insurance? **** take

get rid of points and just have big fines like they do in most parts of europe

or just don't get caught, which is really the best method :D

5 on insurance isn't a problem though, he said, as by the time five years have elapsed they'll have little or no bearing on your premium after so long.

Since so many people have been caught speeding and the market is so competative, the increase of a SP30 on your policy is minimal.

4 years on licence
3 years validity for totting up
5 years validity for insurance

when renewing with elephant they now ask for points within the last seven years. Thought it was a joke and that I'd misread. Lass on the phone then confirmed it when they called me following the quote!
