So apparently Blatter wants them gone. And, initially, I thought I agreed with him. But as much as they are a cruel and horrible thing sometimes, the excitement and nerves of a penalty shootout in a final are unmatched in my opinion. Even as a neutral, I always feel those butterflies when it comes to the wire in a shootout

And god knows, what the alternatives would be? Return of golden goal?

Blatter should stop trying to change football..penalty shootouts are the best way to settle a drawn game after extra time.

I never liked the Golden Goal method.

Wouldn't be surprised if the morons in charge decided shots on goal or possession should be the deciding factor. IMO, penalties should stay and they should focus on other areas of the game that do need improvement.

They're horrible to watch, but so bloody exciting at the same time. It's like hanging on a cliff edge knowing that in 5 minutes, you'll either fall in a pit of utter disappointment and darkness, or be rescued by naked women and handed a beer of success (and fun times). What possible alternative could replace that without being completely awful?

Forget all this and find an alternative to Sepp Blatter

+1

Meh hes just sore that Bayern lost out on penalties ie a german team getting beat by an English team.

Personally i reckon they should keep playing till one by one they all collapse thru sheer exhaustion...at least someone will score a goal that way:p

Penalties do suck in all honesty, worst way to find a winner imo. They should really incorporate a golden goal rule after 30mins of ET or do it within the 30min of ET.

Well it used to be a coin toss! ...that is probably what Sepp has in mind:rolleyes:

I think the semi-final of a Euros game was once decided by the flip of a coin?

LOL really??...now thats even 10x's worse than a penalty shootout. But really unless they come up with a better way of deciding a game then penalties it is.

Take the penalties prior to the extra time period. That way, if the game is still drawn at the end of extra time the winning shoot out team claims the victory. But it also gives the losing shootout team a 30 minute period to make amends.

It would potentially mean 1 team sitting in and defending for the extra time period, but that is usually the case anyway.

Penalties aren't the happiest way to end a draw game, but there really is no other way that is -fair-. Strong emphasis on fair.

Penalties might suck but you can't say they are not fair.

Didn't Blatter suggest that all draws in International tournament groups stages be decided by penalties?

Doesn't it seem odd that he's suddenly decided they're the devils lottery, just after an English team wins a major tournament on penalties.
It's almost as if he's a reactionary idiot!
