Penryn "Wolfdale" First tests - Not Impressed

I dont think these Penryn chips were going to be a massive jump from a Core 2 Duo in the first place. Its the fact that theirs new technology behind the Penryn chips and also they are 45nm.

Performance wise then it looks to be not that much difference, so not much point changing over if u have the equivalent Conroe then.

However the decrease in power consumption is pretty good, expecially under load.

Did they say anywhere the sort of temps they were getting?

They are right underneath the power.

I dont know the system cooling etc 'cos I can not read Chinease (if hats what it is.)

Seems there isnt much of a performace increase over Conroe's certainly nothing earth shattering, some applications see no increase at all, some see upwards of 10%, seems applications optimized for SSE4 see a huge increase though.

Gaming wise, Oblivion saw no increase at all, Lost Planet saw a 9% increase so might be worth waiting if its gaming performance your after.

Will be interesting to see how Phenom does as it supports SSE4 also.

There obvisouly isnt going to be a huge increase in performance 'cos after all it is only a die shrink.

When Nehalem arrives that should offer a rather large increase over the current Core architecture, hopefully as much as it the current Core has over the old Pentium Neburst stuff.

I didn't knnow we were expecting a massive performance boost anyway , the lower temps and lower power envelope are enough to swing it for me.

Penryn/wolfdale is a die shrink of conroe with some improvements to SSE, and more cache... However intel have got 4ghz quad core plans in mind for penryn based cpus, although not in the initial release. Should be pretty quick.

Nehelem is where the next jump in performance will be.. How quickly intel get that one out probably depends on how much pressure they get from Phenom. If a 4Ghz Wolfdale is the fastest X86 cpu then intel wont be in a hurry to push out Nehelem.. But if Phenom at 2Ghz managed to cream Wolfdale at 4Ghz, I am pretty sure intel would rush along to the next cores pretty quick. Not that its likely that a 2Ghz Phenom could cream a 4Ghz Wolfdale, I was just using that as an example.

All it is is a die shrink and some slight modifications.

Thats it.

That means lower power, less heat, and in theory more overclocking.

So a few % increase is pretty dam good.

If you want major increases wait till next year then

can someone please tell me it's just a die shrink again, i didn't hear it enough already in this thread.

will anybody add something knowledgable we didn't already know months ago?

Well I'm sure people who are building their first INTEL system will be steered towards these chips instead of the original conroes.

I'm also sure that a few forum members will swap out their *uber* conroe chips for one of these :)

I'm mainly interested to see if they are able to work on older chipsets like the P965 etc?

Wait for Nehalem for the sick architecture differences that will up performance. For now take this as a very nice die shrink, look at that temperature difference, factor in the fact that clockspeeds will rise, and that the processors will be cheaper to develop for intel, and you've got yourselves a great deal mixed with the 5-10% boost per clock.

Well expecting anything at all from you is pretty optimistic, since all you've added to this thread is yet another "it's only a die shrink" comment and some sarcastic "" smilies.

:)

Ummn, do I have to list all the 5000 odd posts that actually have helped in someway? ;)

Im allowed some "" sometimes, when Im in the mood :p

But you know its all true, it IS a die shrink :p
