Penski cursed me......

higher stall, shift kit is the way forward :D

might be worth talking to Andy Frost (Penn Auto's), that man knows an autobox better anyone else over here - 01902 344004

With manual gearboxes you can even fire little ball bearings into your face when you dismantle the synchro hubs...

I feel your pain.
The last time I took a manual apart, it fired a ball bearing up so high it still hasn't landed. Manuals can be fiddly, and are always pretty time consuming, but auto's are 'orrible IMHO.

Just to make you feel slightly better Lashout, I've got the best part of 270,000 miles on my auto 'box with no ill effects. And a mate of mine over on Vancouver Island with a Vista Cruiser has around 400,000 on his.

:p

stop being a big girl and convert to a mans box :)

manual ***

Funny, that. I don't find my 5000lb V8 BattleWagon™ with an auto 'box all that girly ;)

Nor, I suspect, do owners of those cars that make far too much torque for a sensibly sized manual 'box - anyone with a 535d will know what I'm talking about. And despite the claims of a certain OcUK member (!)*, you won't find one with a manual 'box quite yet given BMW's aversion to buying in a half-decent Tremec transmission.

***edit***

* - should that be former member? I seem to recall Oracle managing to create another account on here at some point, but it seems that one got nuked as well.

the only real gearbox for super torque cars are the tremec ones, anything else just disintigrates, were even struggling with the tremec at the moment, it seems to be killing clutches for fun.

That made me remember reading the event as it unfolded and smiling along the way.
:)

Haha, well after seeing that bellhousing on the V8 forums to take the SBC to a T56 gearbox, it is something playing on my mind...

You are going to need the following:

1) A 1994-1997 T56 complete with bell housing, flywheel, clutch, and slave cyl out of an fbody
2) A cbeam adapter from pro-street performance
3) If your car is 85+ you'll need to shorten the driveshaft.
4) You'll need a offset shifter stick, such as hurst 538-8571

I think I'd need to find a few parts of a 'breaker' manual C4 - finding a 6 speed one of those could be quite challenging, to say the least :D

Similar conversion but using a T5...

Problem is though, the total conversion would probably end up costing 2K - and that's a considerable chunk of the car's value and also twice what I'd pay to have the slushbox removed, repaired and refitted with some stronger bits......Hmmm!

I've found an SBC>T56 bellhousing for 75 quid but the transmissions themselves still have a hefty tag on 'em :)

Interesting thought though...

This is our T56 mounted to the chevy small block.

Get it from the states, with the dollar rate as it is, its a steal. There is some tricky mods to the shifter linkage to get it into the correct position, but well worth it. Only problem we have with the box is the reverse solenoid is a tricky beast, meaning you skip out of reverse all the time.

Fox's 530i is completely reliable and never breaks down ever, ever, ever!

You are an evil man :p

Nevermind Lashout, you seem like the sort of chap who doesn't let things like this bother you so best of luck getting it sorted.

Nah, doesn't bother me at all - I just wish it'd gone in a tire smoking inferno being pounded to hell instead of just coasting into a road :p :D

Repairs authorised, the C4 has a green light!

Apparently I'll have it back in under 5 working days! New torque convertor being fitted too for peace of mind and the rebuild comes with a 12 month unlimited mileage rebuild so can't argue with that - will come fully road and leak tested too :)

Schwing!

Can't wait to have her back :D

Looking forward to working through my list of things to do!

Might lower it next, to boot - would look mean as hell then, combined with what else is in store!

Hi,
Nice car :)
Do you get caught out with the new tax groups, due to its huge engine size, or being and import, do you get away with it?
Good luck with the fix.

Registered before 2001, so I don't think it affects me (not really looked into it) - so as usual I'll be paying the standard "old car greater than 1.55 litres" cost of 185 quid, which I think increases to 200 in the next few years :)

Yea, they have to drive it anyway to set up the TV system which controls the shift sharpness and prevents the clutches burning up, as well as adjusting the kickdown points :)

They'll also use this opportunity to make sure the transmission, lines and cooler aren't leaking :)

Update! Well, I've just returned from:

Where parked outside as I taxi'd up I was much relieved (and overjoyed to be frank) to see:

Back in action :)

Transmission seems great but haven't driven it much (just got it back). Irritatingly, one of my tailpipes has snapped so I'll have to get a bit of a bodge done tomorrow as it's rattling around a treat! Couldn't get a diagnosis as the guy responsible for the job was out - but they spent bloody ages on it as I have an extensive timesheet for it :D Apparently it was definitely a major failure though, rather than something simple.

Really looking forward to giving her a good going over though, looks like it's been through a few wars with an inch thick layer of dirt, grime and dust on her........

As a footnote - BDK have really good facilities and seem to be able to deal with most things. I can't say "definitely recommended yet" as I'll see how the 'box runs - but they're very friendly, competent and even said to drop in any time and they'll get the car on the ramps just to check the sump pan, gaskets and seals for any leaks :)

Big place! :)

Pretty good usually. About 16 solely around town and 25+ at a 70 cruise, US gallons. One of those cars where peak cruising speed is above the legal limit, so you never get best economy unfortunately :D - well, unless you're inclined to *ahem* 'fast' lane speeds :D
