What mobo does the OP have?

If it has a PCI-E slot and can take LGA775 CPUs, then its easily upgradeable.

oh i didn't say, the 7300GS is a PCI-e card

MOBO = RS400-a (also supports agp but i don't want one of those)

and yes the P4 is an LGA775

So you can get yourself a nice new CPU and a GPU for that mobo if you really want to.

You could shop around for a cheap second hand C2D or C2Q.

That particular chipset (ATI Xpress 200) doesn't support Core 2s, it dates back to 2004.

Oh ... I thought it was an LGA 775. I forgot that PCI-E came out during the P4 and Athlon X2 days.

LGA775 is just a set of pin contacts, it was paired with numerous chipsets throughout its lifespan. The latter still restricted what you could use.

It wasn't like AMD platforms which supported pretty much every one of their CPUs (power requirements notwithstanding).

I had a P4 until a year ago with an x850gto

. As others have said, most source games will be fine: HL2 & episodes, TF2, LFD. I played a lot of LOTRO and all versions of GTA3, Far Cry, DOOM 3.
