Why is it people talk crap about either their car or cars in general, when this information could be used by someone else to form an opinion.

E.g Today leaving work one of the guys who has subcontracted us has a new Vauxhall astra 1.6 and was talking to one of my work colleges who has a VTR, now he was looking at the Astra as a change.

Conversation went

"What is the 1.6 enginge in the Astra like, the one in my Meganne is sloooow"
"oh it is not bad it can shift some"
 < Me

The worst thing was as they were giving us work I could not turn around and say liar. 11.5 secs to 60 is not powerful enough to "shift some"

Another example

Oh a C2 Vts is as fast as a Impreza trubo

Again

So do you tell people if you feel they are wrong, or do you just ignore their ignorance. Tell us your funny BS stories as well, cheer me up. :D

Lad at work who has a Old 1.6 Escort..

One week it could do 155, then the week after it did 180 Mph ROFL....

He claims he also blew the gearbox in it the other day doing 90mph in 3rd..

This is generally because most people in the real world know nothing about cars.

'My mate just got one of those Golf GTI, its only about 4 years old, got a 2 litre engine, it really shifts'

'It's no quicker than a bog standard Focus..'

'Errr, dude, its a GTI. It would leave anything this side of a Subaru Impreza for dead, trust me. ITs a GTI'.

'Why did you fit 16s on your Primera, 17s would fill the arches loads better'

'Because the car tram lines and understears with 17s, with 16s it handles like a dream'

'But 17s would mean a lower profile tyre, so it must handle better'

This carried on for about 15 minutes, before it ended with

'Everyone knows that when you have the wheels filling the arches it makes the car handle better'

Shortly after this I walked away

Lad i used to work with YEARS ago was under the impression his 2.3 litre granada would out accelerate my TDR250 to 100mph.

There was also a guy who thought that a 2 litre Sierra Glsi would keep up with my Turbo charged Legacy "in the real world".

Hmm.

I've two for you.....

years ago at school (yes a looooooong time ago !)
mate : i had 55 out of my fizzy yestaday!
us : ??? but the only have 50 on the clock !
mate : yes well it hit 50 then went back 5
swear to god thats true

a 'friend' years ago said he had a 2lt cavalier(stock company car) that smoked RS turbo's - nothing really special from this guy tho, he was always coming out with absolute stonkers

The old redtop 2.0 16v Cavaliers were pretty damn quick though, under 8 seconds to 60. And the stock RS Turbo, despite rose tinted specs all round, were hardly the 1980's equivilent of an Impreza Turbo.

So his claims are entirely possible.

what about an 8v one? i wasn't talking about an sri as stock as they come, the only way that'd out do an RS turbo is if it was pushed off a cliff

i used to know a guy that had a cavaliar or vectra "sport" model. same as a 1.8 cav or vectra, but with a spoiler and a badge. he was absolutely certain that because it was the sport model it did 155 :D

just used to nod and say wow

escort GTI fans have to be the best tho

It's the best way, arguements with people in real life about their cars never go down well, so I never bother. Just nod and sound enthusiastic.

It's subjective. If someone thinks their car is fast, they're going to say it.

You rarely see people saying; "My car, based on my current knowledge, experience and perception of acceleration and speed, is pretty damn fast."

Oh, so you're only opinionated when you're not face to face? ;):p

True but how can a car like the Astra 1.6 mentioned before be deemed fast by anyone that is mad. :D

That could be true actually, I used to be able to get 95 in 3rd out of my mk6 escort 1.6i although my mk4 xr3i will get to about 80 in 3rd but the car is more powerful in the higher gears so need to change earlier.

If he had only driven a 1.4 before then the 1.6 would be fast.

Usually people progress UP the engine size/performance ladder, with every step up they will think the newer car is a lot quicker, they will also look back at the last car and laugh at themselves.

My g/fs 1.6 mk4 golf can hit 120mph and would be classed as nippy in my book, however compared to my G60 or my uncles R1 westfield it is slow.

I would count my G60 as fast but i know there are other cars out there that are a lot quicker. Just because there are quicker cars out there it doesnt mean that its not fast, just not as quick as them!
