People who go and sit in their car to eat their luncheon at work

Every place I have ever worked I have noticed a small subculture of people who do this (almost exclusively men). I've always wondered why but have never found the right opportunity to bring it up with them. I am sure there will be someone in GD who does it so maybe you can let me know the thought process.

Thanks.

It’s not something I usually do but why not? Maybe they just like having some time alone for a bit

In summer I can imagine it's nice, put the radio on, change of scenery etc... But in winter I see people do it, brrrrr, too cold.

In the days before things like MP3 players and phones with music capabilities (granted things like Walkmans existed) I and often 1-2 colleagues would go listen to music or the radio in a car on lunch break.

Some might value the more defined break from work due to not being in the building especially if there are managers, etc. that frequently bother someone about non-important work matters while on break.

A girl in my place does this but it's because she is paranoid that she sounds like a pig eating. She's not wrong TBF

That's nothing, I work with a load of Spanish and South Americans and during the summer it's not uncommon to find the odd few napping in their cars on a lunchtime siesta!

Because home is loud and hectic, and work is loud and hectic. Silence isn't easily obtained in day to day adulting.

I've done it occasionally, sometimes because i just fancied a break/change of scene (especially during frantic day).

Its a psychological thing, much like how it can be beneficial to have a distinct office space if your job allows working from home because it can give a clear defined difference between work time and free time, sort of the same school of thought of not answering out of hours emails.

maybe they dont like the people they work with and its the only bit od release of the days work they get on their own. :D

I work with a women who used to do this, the weirdest part was that she used to sit in the passenger seat rather than the drivers seat and when I said, ahh I suppose you can be more comfortable while you eat in that seat because the wheel doesnt get in the way, her reply was, actually never thought about it like that, the reason I sit in that seat is so it wears it a bit more as no one ever sits there. weird people are weird...

I don't do it at work, but whenever I take my father to the hospital for an appointment I'll sit in the car in the carpark with a couple of soft drinks*, and listen to some music whilst reading/napping.
It's one of the few times I can listen to music without having to wear headphones and be uninterrupted by the computer/family for any length of time:)

So I can see exactly why people might do it at work, it could be their only chance during the working day to simply relax and not have to be sociable (especially if they work with people they may find hard to get along with).

*I learned long ago to take a good supply of drinks, as my dad's appointments can last anything from an hour to 6+ hours with no indication of how long (as it's the eye clinic and he usually sees a consultant who is on call for A&E if there are any eye emergencies/injuries it can delay things for hours, I think the longest was about 8 hours).

When I worked in retail I did this every now and then to either get fresh air or peace from people I didn't want to talk to in the staff room

So basically OP they hate you and use lunch to escape for a while

I wish the people who bring incredibly stinky lunches to work would do this.

But no, those guys like to get it out, spread it all over the table, and make sure it's in your face as much as possible.

Often leaving entire rooms uninhabitable :p

You know who you are.
