People who go and sit in their car to eat their luncheon at work

I eat at my desk at work (rather than the communal area / canteen as I don’t like eating in front of people, with them constantly trying to make small talk whilst cramming food in their mouths.

I live close enough to work now that I can go home for lunch but when I didn't I would sit in my car at lunch every day. Would read a book and eat my lunch in peace. I didn't want to sit there listening to people talking with food in their mouths or eat like a 5 year old because they don't know how to eat like a human. Noisy eating is my pet hate and for some unknown reason makes me insta' rage :)

I go and sit in my car on my weekend job. Been doing it for almost 17 years.

I just like the peace and quite with a brew.

That's nothing, I work with a load of Spanish and South Americans and during the summer it's not uncommon to find the odd few napping in their cars on a lunchtime siesta!

That's nothing! Our warehouse guys take sheets of insulation and use them as beds sleeping in the grass at the side of our building.

I've done it a few times, usually when the weathers nice and I can have the windows open.

It's just to get away from the office environment for a short while, allows me to clear my head

I used to do this all the time when i ran the sheetmetal department of the company i worked for. Everyone had staggerd breaks so it was impossible not to get disturbed if i had lunch in the break room or at my desk.
The only place i didnt get bothered was in my car.

When I was a lot younger and worked in retail in a large department store as a manager, I used to go to my car lunchtime because it was boring in the canteen for an hour and I wanted to smoke and listen to music. I used to be a heavy smoker back then and even then you could not smoke in the canteen. It hadn't been banned for long though.

"Hey could you.... ah I'll come back if you're eating your lunch" <stands there looking for you to say it's fine>

"I really need something and it's really quick"

<phone rings> <coworkers phone rings> "yeah he's at his desk..." <desk phone rings again>

"Hey did you get that thing finished"

I work in an environment that has zero respect for your personal time. Granted we do have a huge canteen but no one I know uses it, plus lunchtime I can get chores accomplished if I feel like it or just call mates and talk freely.

I’ve had variations of this at every large company I’ve worked for if I tried to eat at my desk. Fortunately, my last employer had a decent canteen where no-one bothered you and was in a large business park with plenty of outdoor spaces to eat in on a sunny day.

When I was in the UK, I had a 25 year old guy that worked for me that did this.

When I casually asked him why he reasoned that he did not consider anyone that worked in the office to be a friend of his, and he would not choose outside of his contract to be with them. He hated the idea of being in a forced environment of a canteen etc where he would be under some element of social pressure to communicate and talk etc.

I guess he just decided to cut this scenario out of the equation for him.

When I worked in retail back in a previous life I used to go out and sit in my car for this very reason.

Loved getting away from colleagues in the break room. It didn't help that I really detested the job, too. I didn't like the fakery of the people and always contemplated just leaving the job without another job to go to. That half an hour without being pestered by other people is what got me through.

I used to do it to read for a bit, nice quiet space. People always asked why I didnt read in the break room, well it was open to the sales floor, people were coming in and out making their lunches and quite frankly the chairs were no where near as comfortable as my car so why not.

Now I only have a 30 minute lunch so I don't really leave the office now.

Every place I have ever worked I have noticed a small subculture of people who do this (almost exclusively men). I've always wondered why but have never found the right opportunity to bring it up with them. I am sure there will be someone in GD who does it so maybe you can let me know the thought process.

Thanks.

To keep away from the rest of the officer particularly nosey people

:P

I wish the people who bring incredibly stinky lunches to work would do this.

But no, those guys like to get it out, spread it all over the table, and make sure it's in your face as much as possible.

Often leaving entire rooms uninhabitable :p

You know who you are.

We had to throw a microwave away in work after someone's mackerel exploded in there. No amount of cleaning could get rid of the fish smell.

Are these the same people who use the word luncheon ?

Quite!

Nothing like bringing in last nights curry heated up and stinking the entire office out!

Eurghhhhh.

I must admit i hate using the microwave after someone has steamed some fish or something in there, it really does stink.
