People with contact lenses

I've been wearing the monthly ones for 21 months now.

Being monthly - I put them in, and 30 days later I take them out and throw them away. That's all I have to do, other than the odd occasion they itch or I get something in my eye, I'll take them out, clean them up and put them back in again.

I wore glasses for about 10 years before trying contacts, and the difference is amazing. I can see everywhere, all the time, I can lay in bed on my side and watch TV (something I couldn't do comfortably with glasses), I can get out of bed in the middle of the night and see where I'm going.

Driving is so much better too, I can see so much more out of my peripheral vision than before!

They will feel odd at first - you have something in your eye which you're not used to! ;)

I used to feel every single eye-lash in my eyes, and couldn't take them out - most of the time now I don't even notice if I do have an eyelash in my eye! And when I notice/get told, it's no hassle to take it out.

Contacts are highly recommended by me :)

I'm currently a few days into my trial :) So far i think they're great! It is very odd though, and i can't get them in/out all that quickly!

I've forgotten what all the different options are though, would someone be able to run through them, as i'm unsure as to what to go for at the moment. Also what sort of costs am i looking at having to pay? I have an astigmatism so i think my contacts are different? I really should remember all this from when i was at the optitions last week, but i was concentrating on trying to put my lenses in :D

It takes a while to get used to them, but you will be able to do it all quickly with some practise. I find it's easiest to put them in if I look slightly up in front of a mirror, so the pupil is centred and then don't move it! To take them out, I put my index finger and thumb at opposite sides of my eyeball, and gently move them in until I feel the lens, and then push them together and it just pops out.

Is your astigmatism bad? I have a slight astigmatism in one eye, but my optician said the toric lenses are for people who are affected quite badly. I think that you can get all types of lenses as torics now, so the main options are:
Daily Disposables - cost more but once you have them, you can wear them whenever, more comfortable but very flimsy.
Monthly Disposables - can't really be kept beyond a month of the first wearing, cheaper, need to be cleaned and soak for at least 8 hours per day.
Extended Wear Monthly Disposables - can be worn 24/7, more expensive than normal monthlies.

You will normally get 3 months supply of lenses at a time, but pay a direct debit every month. The direct debit should also include aftercare from your opticians.
This will tell you how much the lenses are to just buy on their own, but add at least £5 per month for the cost of the direct debit.
