Perceived as a noisy neighbour

Next time he bangs on the wall, go round and bang on his face.

... or, alternatively, next time he bangs on the wall you could go round and ask if you can come into the flat to get an idea of just how loudly the sound is bleeding in, as you're upset yourself at the fact that you're causing a problem for others but need to get an image of just how bad it actually is before you can hope to rectify it beyond sitting in silence every evening.

Could you have your PC in a different room?

I use ear plugs when I'm trying to sleep as I live in a flat, but on the other hand if i can hear it over the ear plugs I go ape. Trying to sleep when I have to get up early the next day can be a pain. It's why now a days I'm more than happy to turn off before about 7/8...

There are two clear camps forming here.

I just got some silly free iphone DB meter and it said 70DB sitting directly infront of my pc. Background is 45DB. Is 70 loud?

hmm, not sure how accurate this is. 70db is like an alarm clock or vacuum. It isn't that loud.

But it isn't clear whether it is too loud churchhawk. This is obviously a touchy subject. no one likes a noisy neighbour!

Nope, just some little bookshelf speakers on my window sill on the outer wall. They have maybe 4" drivers.

This could be the problem, change the location of the speakers or put some padding under them, the sound will be transfering straight into the wall.

OP.

Approach your neighbours. Say something along the lines that you don't wish to be noisy but are unsure on just how loud it is. Say you will play some music and for them to let you know at which point it's too loud. Once you've established a reasonable level of noise. Then ask them what times it is reasonable/unreasonable.

A good neighbour will understand that odd weeks you can be noisy. It's a two-way street. Hopefully they won't take the **** and say to never play loud music. If they do, then ignore them.

I have lived with noisy neighbours for over a year in my old place. And it made me rage, we had to go the council route of complaining and as you would expect, it came to nothing. They were horrific though. Every night trance music and pills. Noise till 9am. If I could have stabbed him and gotten away with it, I would have. That's how rage inducing it can be.

Hopefully your neighbours will be a bit understanding with noise sometimes. What you want to do, is establish when that line is crossed.

70db you say?

If background is 45db then surely its not too loud.

If the wall cant filter out 25db its not very well built!

but 70db is in no way antisocial.

edit: just turned my tv up to 70db worth (according to free phone program) and went into the next room (hollow walls), and couldn't hear much at all.

Do they just sit in their lounge in silence or something?

When I was with the ex we had an absolute tool below us who would bang on the ceiling every time there was a little bang, the difference being we had a baby and it was usually the poor mite falling backwards and banging his head when shuffling about! It got to the point where I had enough one day and confronted the goon outside the flats and he **** himself :/

Problem was it never stopped and he continued doing it even now after I have moved out although he would go completely out of his way to avoid me even to the point if I looked out the window and saw him coming into the flats he would pretend to recieve a phone call or pretend he forgot something and turn around and walk round the block till I dissapeared from the window

That sounds horrendous FabienO. I rented a terrace house for a couple of years and the neighbours would scream and shout at 2am. That was bad enough.

I will knock on their door or pop a note through if they are out so we can have a chat. Clearly the best way. Some good suggestions here with how to go about finding a compromise.

Buy some turntables and take up scratching or alternatively blast out "knock three times" or "Knocking on heavens door" every time he bangs.

Had similar issues with my neighbour today, ended up dialing 999 after he said he was going to kill me lol. Police came out and agreed he's an utter nutcase and they're starting a harrassment case against him.

Always had great neighbours, growing up etc. Since I've been living with my GF we've always been next to *****!

I used to play my tv too loudly. Was embarrassing when the neighbours came round the day after I'd been watching porn to ask if I can keep the TV turned down in the future.

Best get some wireless headphones is my advice.

Also your idea of going round there when your music is on isnt a bad one as you can see how reasonable/unreasonable your neighbour is being.

Should have told them it wasn't the TV..... ;)

I've got a GREAT idea!

Put a soundtrack on from a barking dog howling n such, then when someone complains say " But I don't have a dog "

If next door can hear your music, its too loud.

This is the simple fact.
You mentioned the Noise Act earlier which does indeed cover disturbances between 11PM and 7AM BUT the EPA will also take into consideration "noise emitted from premises so as to be prejudicial to health or a nuisance" and it appears you're regularly bothering these people.

I've been on the receiving end and it drove me nuts, and that was an infrequent disturbance.

Just so you know.
