So he has gone from being very very happy at Sauber and not interested in Ferrari (who aren't interested in him.. yet) to now saying he is ready for a top team and to try and win WDC.

I rate Perez quite highly although he clearly has a lot to learn, but has improved this year a fair bit. To me he is a bit like Rosberg, where you get the feeling he can be very quick in the right team but when moved to the right team, hasn't gone much better?

Thoughts?

Either:

A) He is getting his name in the McLaren hat should Hamilton leave, which is a sensible thing to do
B) He is getting his name in the Ferrari hat because he doesn't think they have anyone lined up for a seat in 2014, again a sensible thing to do.
C) He knows something about Sauber that we don't
D) Its contract negotiation time at Sauber and he's playing hard ball

Also (in relation to previous 'discussions'):

Perez said that his association with Ferrari would not be an obstacle to him joining McLaren if the opportunity arose:

“No, not really. I have a nice connection to Ferrari through the Ferrari Academy but I am just part of the Ferrari Academy, not part of the Ferrari team. So it doesn’t affect [it].”

it will be interesting in 2014 to see if ferrari have the balls to drop someone who has failed miserably so they can get someone like perez to get the job done.

should have droped the guy after abu dhabi 2010 imo all that race did was bring shame upon the prancing horse!

sooner or later Perez will get a shot in a decent seat, if it happens as part of MS/Hamilton shuffle then great, but otherwise it will be 2014 I would have thought

There is still so much press about LH's move being more and more definite to Merc, this surely confirms.............he is staying at McLaren :D

Hmm, Perex in a Merc next year?

Or would that be a side step rather than a forward one?

Is he actually out of contract with Sauber at the end of this year, or does any move mean terminating an existing contract there?

It makes sense for him to get his name about and get teams interested while he is onto a good thing, there is no guarantee if he does stay at Sauber the car will be as competative and a poor season could mean he isn't quite the hot propety he is at the minute.

He certainly does seem to be the current up and comer though, so a big team may try snap him up to prevent their rivals doing the same.

I also rate Perez,

I think he's a smart driver, conclusive evidence throughout his time in F1 yet most recently with Kimi at Monza.

He's quick, he's basically got all the attributes a team wants. Bonus being that he's good with the media as well.

Good luck to him finding a top team I'm sure he'll prevail wherever he goes.

Checo's an interesting one, because his performances seem to vary wildly from circuit to circuit.

He's good working with the 2012 tyres on the right strategy, but he's also back the midfield with Kobayashi (who seems to hate these new tyres) a lot of the time as well. All three podiums came at fast tracks (Canada & Monza in particular), whereas he's scored no points at the slow twisty circuits like Hungaroring and Bahrain.

Perez is a good driver but it's too soon to declare him the next Vettel. His prior racing record isn't all that great (even Maldonado beat him in GP2) and he's lucky he got the Sauber seat, in part thanks to Carlos Slim's Telmex money. That said, Hamilton dominated the lower classes and has been somewhat inconsistent in F1 so they're not a definitive gauge of future performance.

Pretty much agree, have seen it said he has benefited from being outside the top 10 in qual for 2 of his podiums which opens up a better strategy. I agree with Luca Di that he is not ready certainly for a Ferrari drive.

He is more ready than Massa unquestionably

just how accurate is a simulators representation of a drivers skill level? the best drivers have always relied on feeling and sound to let them know they are on the edge.

does a simulator realistically give this information to the driver?

some people might be lighting quick in sims and computer games but not so great in the real thing

Even if he is, going up against Alonso tends to destroy your career (Hamilton aside). :p

Speaking of Massa, didn't he have 3 seasons at Sauber plus a year of testing before the second Ferrari seat?
