Perfect Keyboard?

Longevity and quality of the typing experience. Mechanicals are capable of something like 50 million keystrokes, whereas even the best membrane keyboards are only capable of 20 million, but you'll notice the membrane going well before the 20 million mark.

A mechanical is expensive, but you'll only ever need to buy one in your lifetime. Though, with all the different switches in various boards, you'll probably find yourself wanting to try more as the mechanical bug bites.

If you spend a lot of time writing, programming, coding, scripting, whatever at your keyboard, you want the best tool for the job. And switching to a mechanical is like having an epiphany. I got my first mech a while back and now I wouldn't type on anything else but a mechanical unless I absolutely have to (like when using a laptop or my brothers computer).

I think my old black Cherry board was a mech, but that went long time back. What do you suggest looking into (board wise) to purchase, I would like some, but not shed loads, of macros (use for passwords). I can purchase a desklamp if needs be.

If it was a Cherry G80-3000 then it was a mech. The G80-3000 was rebranded and sold as the Das Keyboard II as well.

For gaming, people say use the Cherry brown or black switches. Personally, I've never had a problem using the Cherry blue switches while gaming. It boils down to how you type/press keys and individual taste really as to which switch you will prefer. I spend a lot of time writing at my computer, so really like the blues. If you are after LEDs and backlighting, then the Razer mech is probably the best option. As for macro keys and the like, I can't help you there. I like my keyboards with the bare minimum of keys.

The unfortunate thing about mechanical keyboards is there doesn't seem to be much of a scene for them, even amongst people that consider themselves computer enthusiasts. So getting your hands on one to try before you buy is a problem. I just jumped in and bought my Cherry blue switch Filco first without ever having used one before. A few weeks later I ordered the brown and black switches to try out (unfortunately no-one from geekhack lives local, so couldn't try theres). I didn't like the black or brown switches as much as the blues, so I sold those on.

If he want's the perfect keyboard he'll probably need a decent budget. I do like the look of the new razer keyboard, then again I'm a big razer fan (Lycosa and Deathadder :D)

I'm a Razer Lycosa and Deathader user myself and if I was after a new keyboard the only 1 I would consider would be the Razer Blackwidow.

At the risk of being bitched out of it , I am really enjoying using the apple wireless keyboard sans numpad with my Sugo gaming pc, its tiny, has the chiclet keyboard type i find easier to type on, and i have got very experienced at touch typing on it without much difficulty, although it is not the perfect keyboard by any means, its my Mr.Right now :)

I want a Filco Majestouch tenkeyless with blue switches myself, but I want a UK layout really so I keep waiting for them to appear, apparently early 2011 is a possibility now.

Currently I use a Model M, it is a bit large though and I could really use a Windows key.
