Hi guys i'm looking at getting a new gfx card - now i have found a £7900gtx 512mb with clocks of
# Memory Clock : 1.6 GHz
# Clock rate : 650 MHz
# Chipset : 7900 GTX
for £349

but i want to know if it will really be a noticeable performance difference against the 7900gt 256mb XXX extreme edition which has clocks of
# Memory Clock : 1630 mHz
# Clock rate : 550 MHz
# Chipset : 7900 GT
which oc have for £276?

Is the GTX 512mb really worth the extra £73?

the highest res i'l be running is 1280x1024 really and that's only for FEAR

The performance difference will be minimal - although games will only become more texture centered which means if you want future proofing you'd be better with the 512MB. If it's just short term then the GT should do you fine on medium res.

hmmz true, but is £73 really justifiable? would you think the GT would run FEAR comfortably and quake4? i'm not really a big gamer i tend to play cs1.6 and source mainly.

Just wondering why you haven't considered the ATI X1900XT as you can get great peformance from the card for less than the price of the GTX with 512MB RAM :)

Unless you're planing on going SLI at some point later :)

The GT'll kick the holy crap outta them all.

Or even the X1800XT that's currently on an incredible special offer right now, since he basically just wants it for F.E.A.R. @ 1280.

yeah, i just found the GT for £258 aswell lol :D can't wait till payday now hehehehe
You should seriously consider the X1800XT. It's currently on an incredible deal and will out-perform a 7900GT.

Just been thinking - get a x1800xt as it beats the 7900gt and is far cheaper. On OcUK this week only for £170.32 Including VAT. This offer wont last btw - it'll probably be over by thursday.

:edit: I got owned  :p :D

look at my sig i have a x1800xt 512mb atm, and it's just too buggy for me :S, has put me off ATi, and after reading a diff forum a guy has got his gt to 600 / 1800 on air. also found a 450 / 1320 for £199 inc vat + del new

If you have the budget get the 7900 GTX but the res at which you play the GT will be fine.

They overclock fantastically too.So don't worry about the clock speed you will get 580/1750 usually on all GT's.

It amazes me How many pipe up about the x1800 and x1900 when you clearly ask about the performance between the GTX and the GT.

They are so eager they forget to look at your sig harris1986 :p

My 7900 GT beat the x1800 xt when overclocked and the x1800 doesn't come close when overclocked with an overclocked 7900GT.

Yep, even the thread title is "Performance comparison between these two cards" :D

haha well said lol, aye 7900gt it is then :D, now i got the choice of either getting the 550/1630 for £258 or the 450/1320 for £199 inc del + vat?

I'd get the cheapest one, it should be no less of a clocker than "OC" version.

Good idea, Ive had an order with that place selling the 7900gt for £199 for nearly a month now, they keep put the date of delivery back. I got fed up in the end and manged to get hold of a x1800xt 512mb for £197 Inc Del from the OcUK clearance :D
