Hi Guys,

I'm in a bit of a dilemma at the moment and am looking to upgrade from my old GFX card in a new build. Looking across the current DX11 ATI range, i've been looking at the cards mentioned in the title. Could anyone who has either of these GFX card setups give me a heads up with regards to performance? For the price of a 5870, you can buy 2 5770's and have quite a bit of change. But do you get the same level of performance from the latter Crossfire setup?

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks much,
Bing.

They do seem to be slightly faster in some games where ATI have optimized for Crossfire, but in games such as World of Warcraft and less mainstream games it's generally better to avoid Crossfire.

I have 2 x powercolor 5770 and they rip through every game , and works out cheaper then 5870 !

This is the main factor really, the price. When you save as much as you do, surely the Crossfire setup wins, even if in odd programs/games the performance isn't quite as good?

..Along marches the 4890 Crossfire crowd who proceed to tell everyone about how their cards pee all over the 5770s.

Did someone say DirectX 11?..

5770 CF is definately the value package.

Not me, I only have a single card. :) Just trying to decide which DX11 setup to go for in a new rig, honest. :D

Thanks for the heads-up guys.

The 5770's beat a single 5870. However, if you wanted more performance, you are limited due to the crossfire. You could look into the 5850 and then move the 5850 into crossfire. Beats the 5970 in some games.

The 5850 can be overclocked to 5870's performance, so I wouldn't pay the extra £100 over the 5850 for the 5870.

5770 CF is pretty good, but tbh I'd take a single 5870 over 'em. Performance and scaling are poor in several key titles e.g. Dawn of War 2 which would frustrate me.

Also mate, you could look at it this way.

Single gpu = smooth gameplay
Crossfire = high fps

Some people get somthing called "micro stuttering" while in games, this is due to crossfire/sli. Where as other people don't.

From the sounds of things i'd be better sticking with my 4890 in the new rig, and then looking to get a 5850/5870 once there's a need to have DX11.

Thanks again for your posts.

5770's beat the 5870 overall. A couple of titles (borderlands comes to mind) suffer from driver issues (low min framerate) out of line with general performance that will more than likely be ironed out soon enough. Have a look at the guru3d december vga charts, i seem to remember the crossfire 5770's beating the 5870 in 7 of the 9 games tested and even beating the 5970 in 2.

Here it is

About equal if you go by the averages, but the HD5870 will provide a more stable framerate with higher minimum and overall give you a better gaming experience.
