Surely if you didn't want the hassle of crossfiring 5770s or the added cost of a 5870 you could buy a 5850? They clock very well too, too the point of equaling a 5870, costs the same as two 5770s, and can be upgraded with another 5850 at a later date. This is the main attraction of a 5850 for me. Unlike the 4 series where the 4850 had GDDR3 and a much slower core, the 5850 isn't much slower than a 5870
In my scenario, at the time of purchase, the 5850 was not in stock when my funds were available and it still is not as readily available as the 5770.


If the funds were available now , I would probably get a 5850 instead but my next purchase is April 2010 with a Fermi (gonna give it a go) if its rubbish, i will get a 5970/5870 CF which shud be readily availbale then and hopefully lower in price.
