Performance per watt

My ever evolving MITX build is changing again.

I plan to get either the RVZ01 or ML07 when they are released, allowing a full sized gpu that my current case does not.

270 fits the bill, however I only have a 350w PSU.

So I am looking to dump my FM2 build for Intel, but it must perform at least on par with my current 6800k @ 4.4Ghz but at sub-100w.

So which would be better?

3570k with it's 77w tdp?
2500k undervolted?

What gives the best performance per watt from the sub-100W crop of cpus, but goes toe-to-toe with a 6800k?

Well, haswell would be the better choice over the sandy and Ivy chips you listed. less power, slightly higher IPC.

Also a 'K' might be a bit of a waste given that overclocking would be quite limited in a mini ITX.

Someone with better experience of Intel set-ups should be able to spec a good mb.

I'd drop a Xeon 1230v3 (i7 Haswell with no igp) in an ITX H81 board (Gigabyte or Asus)
That's a good bang for buck setup.
No overclocking the CPU sadly, but it annihilates the 6800k.

Plenty of power on the Be quiet psu to run that and the 270 without stressing it at all.

Sorry, I should have mentioned budget, I'll be buying second hand, so ideally want to keep it under £150 for the cpu/mobo.

It depends what you want to do with it really. If we're just talking gaming and media and 60 hz 1080p screen, the chip you have shouldn't really hold back a 270 much.

It's be worth comparing dual graphics vs a 270 as well. I'd be interested to see how a 6800 + a 7750 compare now that frame pacing is for the most part sorted out.

Perhaps the 7600 is worth a look, I'm just really trying to get away from 100w cpu to allow headroom for the GPU, but still need as much cpu oomph as possible as my Displaylink screen depends on cpu power to manage 1080p.

It would probably be slower than your 6800. kaveri is around 10% better clock for clock than richland, but won't clock as high, so it evens out. The GPU is much better but you won't be using that so not worth it at all.

Just for reference, my system at full load (mining on CPU and GPU) pulls 380W. That's

i5-2500k overclocked to 4.5ghz,
MSi R9 270 overclocked to 1050mhz core, 1500mhz memory,
Nvidia 8800GT just to run the desktop when mining on the 270
Samsung 840PRO 128GB SSD,
8GB Ram,
Corsair H70 with 2 120mm fans.
2 120mm case fans,
3 140mm case fans,
1 old SATA HDD
Some LED's.

Allowing for 95% efficiency in the PSU (optimistic), that system is drawing 361W. So I suspect you'd be just fine with either setup, as a constant 100% CPU 100% GPU load scenario is fairly unlikely, and you won't be running a second GPU.

Cheers for that!

After some testing last night, I think I will be ok keeping the 6800k.

Gaming saw 150w pulled from the wall (so more like 120w being delivered by my psu), and I forgot to take my 7750's wattage in to consideration when changing to a 270.

TDP for it is 55w, so I would have 200w free for the 270, more than enough given that is what my 7950s pull.

What PSU do you use?? What motherboard??

My current main system is running a Xeon E3 1220,mini-ITX H67 motherboard,GTX660,8GB DDR3 RAM,SSD and an HDD off an XFX PRO 450W. With an older HX520W(as a test) the system consumed under 200W at the wall when running Tombraider and Skyrim(looked at the power readings over 30 minutes). With the XFX,power consumption is just over 200W at the wall using the 3DMark combined test.
