Performance Problems

I have recently noticed that my performance in games (rubbish framerate etc etc) has been pretty appauling as of late, games such as The Witcher and Tabula Rasa. Where i more than meet the recommended requirements, I'm pretty stumped at the moment as to what could be causing this so i would appreciate it if any one could give me a hand.

Below is my current specification.

Intel Core 2 Duo CPU @ 2.4GHZ
Gainward Bliss Geforce 8800 640MB GTS
2GB Corsair Memory
Gigabyte 965p-DS3 Motherboard
Seasonic 600W PSU
80GB Seagate Hard Drive (I know it's small in the process of upgrading had to go with it due to budget constraints at the time)

Also i forgot to mention i'm playing games at my monitors native resolution 1680x1050 Widescreen

Thanks.

I'm running windows XP Professional SP2 I've tried running CCleaner and Disk Keeper to defrag, didn't solve the problem unfortunately.

The speed and size of todays drives for a start. You're unlikely to notice any real speed increase if you defrag your drive. It might make sense on really old 1-platter drives, where rearranging data sequentially optimizes the reading of data, but modern hdds have multiple platters and the heads don't write sequentially across one platter then the next as such - the data is spread over the platters.
IMO pointless and asking for trouble if your machine fails or turns off during a long defragging. Also, to fill a drive full of data to the point (if you could) where it's truely mangled and totally, utterly NEEDS defragging would take a very long time indeed. I have three 300Gb hdds and I rarely fill them right up, then delete and uninstall stuff, then fill them again etc etc. By the time i'd need a defrag, i'd have probably reinstalled or ghosted my OS back several times.

nothing wrong with that setup, apart from maybe the HDD, but i don't think that would cause you such performance problems. I think you should run 3dmark06 and post the result. Should give an idea if anything is wrong
