I've been putting it off and off and off and now I really need to do it, i've done around 300 words and am finding i've hit a wall with what to write. I found a nice example for an MA one on Exeter unis site and have been "copying" that but any tips or ideas for what to write for an MSc masters?

(From what I understand masters personal statements are different to undergrad statements, which I haven't got anyway as that was 6 years ago!)

I am currently doing an MSc and wish I had got a job instead. I am totally sick of education. Please consider your options very carefully.

Well I can't find a job which is partly why I i'm applying for one. Also in my area masters are almost compulsary for a job (especially grad schemes). I had hoped to do get a job, which is why I left instead of doing an undergrad masters... :)

What is your field? Prepare to have no life for 11 months if you do the MSc. Prepare to study 7 days a week.

Who you getting your funding from, or you working partime amongst your studies? I'm having trouble with the financial aspect of the course and being able to afford it, would love to do my Masters though :(

Geoscience, so Mining and Oil and Gas. I'm looking at doing a Petroleum Geoscience masters which involves 4 months of work within a company for the project.

I know it will be quite hard, however it's also the parts I enjoyed in my undergrad course. It's either that or sit at home/dead end job...

I'm hoping I get a job before then! But if I get the masters I will probably do that instead.

There are quite a few scholorships/sponsorships available for the courses so i'm hoping to grab that, otherwise I won't be going...

Well my MSc is in Petroleum Engineering. I think the Geoscience students have a bit more free time than us but not much. I also agree that for most Geoscience positions with an energy company, you need an MSc. However, for petroleum engineers a good bachelors degree is sufficient.

Ah ok. Where are you studying?:)

You come in from an engineering undergrad or geology/env science?

TBH I'm not that interested in working for the big four but more in the exploration and service industry, still there are very few jobs out there at the moment so any way of "improving" myself I need to jump on.

Right, I have a reasonable first draft, anyone with experience of masters personal statements willing to have a quick look at it? I don't particularly want to post it up on an open forum.. :)

Might I suggest thestudentroom.co.uk , they have a dedicated forum where you can post your PS and only the guys who are qualified to give advice on them are able to see it. I'm not sure if it's meant for Masters PS's though it's worth a try.

I am at Imperial college, my undergrad is mechanical engineering.

I'd imagine there would be a lot more at the beginning of the graduate recruitment cycle (September/October).

Yes they have no UK positions available you muppet. UK positions closed in November, 60 people on my course applied to them and only 1 person got an offer. This is a terrible time to join the energy industry. To the op I have heard Schlumberger are going to be mass recruiting around May, might be worth a go.

Under normal circumstances, someone with an MSc from Imperial would have their backside kissed by every oil company out there to work for them. However, even the major operators have no money. Chevron are not even partaking in graduate recruiting this year....what does that say!?

If you're gonna work for someone like BG Group, looking solely for a UK position is stupid. You get moved around a lot.

Yes but you will be BASED in the UK. The jobs on offer at the moment are not based here. He will find it very hard as a foreigner to get positions in those countries, you are not going to be shunted around the globe very much in your first year or so although you will be rotated around departments.

Calling me a muppet and generally having an aggressive tone??? What have I done wrong.

The person I was talking about, started last September and will be off to Mumbai for 6 months next month.

I'm just going on experiences.

You say foreigners would find it hard to get jobs there. But these countries don't exactly have universities as good as the UK. I'm sure a home bias can only go so far.

Cool, thanks. :)

I have an account there that I never use as it's an "interesting" forum.:p

I'll get it looked at however. :)
