Personalised number plates and snobbery?

I'm looking to change my tacky NI number plate to something with a bit more class. My friends all call my car William T. D'eautrive after a famous French/American so I want a plate with his initials on it. He died 187 years ago so that would be an appropriate number if possible.

Can anyone make a suggestions please? My budget is $500,000. I can purchase next week when the funds are transferred from my Swiss bank account.

I suspec its worth what, 500 quid? A grand tops? Something like that. Just because you paid 1500 quid for it doesn't mean its truely worth that. Regtransfers stuff is always really expensive, a while back they were selling stuff for more than the DVLA had the SAME plates for (Not yours, before you start) so how you can judge their list prices as being a plates true 'worth' I dont know.

by looking at similar plates and what they sold for

its the same with valueing a house, if my neighbours house is the same as mine and it sold for £500K then my house is worth around £500K, may not be exactly the same figure but should be around that area, therefore i know in terms of numbers and letter sits worth around £1500 but to the right person it could be worth up to 100 times that

It's not that easy with plates. Yours sold for £1500 because you had more money than sense and an obsession with people thinking you are a leet murderer. Another, similar plate is only worth £1500 if somebody else just like you wants to buy it. How many more are there?

Whereas how many more house buyers are there..?

So its along the lines of "WTD 187"?

I truely didnt have a clue what 187 was a code for until that search, i doubt anyone else would have a clue either. As you say, cool to the right person i guess, but i feel that knowledge is a little too specific to make for such a value.

187 is a numeric code for the crime of murder. It is primarily used by law enforcement officials in the U.S. state of California—especially police, prosecutors, and judges—because Section 187 of the California Penal Code defines the crime of murder. The number is pronounced by reading the digits separately as "one-eight-seven," or "one-eighty-seven," rather than "one hundred eighty-seven."

The number 187 is now in common use by many gangs throughout the United States as a synonym for murder; this usage has been reported among gangs as far away as Florida[1] and Wisconsin[2].

Oh I see. Psycho Sonny is a black gangsta, patrolling the ghetto in Glasgow in a diesel Golf wit' da' pigs on his tail f'sho.

that is my exact plate - and its registered to a diesel golf and not a vespa scooter

You may be lucky with it i guess with a very specific buyer, its better than i thought it would be.

However unless you find someone who appreciates it for what you have found it to be, to most people its simply an xxxyyy plate for someone with initials "WTD". The 187 is not something i could imagine most people would even think about.

like i said to the right person it could be worth "up to" 100 times what i paid for it

meaning somebody could offer anything between £1,500 and £150,000, at no point did i say it was worth £150,000 jus that someone could be willing to pay up to that much for it

like i said - to a specific person it may be worth a lot of money

i did search for like 2 months before finding the little gem, i couldnt find a decent plate with my initials or my name, so i decided to look at other things and i found it

the best thing is most people have no idea what it means - so they just think its a private reggy - but everyone who knows what it means has said it is a nice plate and to get it for such a low price was a steal in my opinion

But it isn't a little gem... it's no different to my plate or anybody else's plate. You still made out it was worth a fortune when it really isn't!

Regardless of whether the whole 187 thing etc is any good, its still an xxx yyy plate. These are always worth a fair bit more than plates like ours, he'll probably at the least get his money back if it were to be sold.
