Thinking about getting one soon, is there anything I need to know?

I've had a look on the DVLA website about not making your car look newer than it is etc, but just wanted to know if there were any hidden clauses or anything to look out for?

Also, cheapest place to buy from? Seems so far that direct from the DVLA is best?

Not really, don't try to be smart about the spacings etc, just remember it's then £80 a time to transfer, it can become an expensive hobby.

DVLA best place

you cant illegally space the characters. They must remain in the same format.

Apart from that, there arent any rules to be aware of.

Direct from DVLA is the best. The other plates for sale are ones sold by the DVLA and then put on sale by a third party. Usually to make a profit.

Unless you want a specific plate thats not available from the DVLA, buy direct.

DVLA will be best, and yes, you can only out a plate on the car that is older or the same age as the car.

So no putting a 60 plate on a 55 Astra and being cheeky :P

What is the penalty for illegal spacing? So many people do it that it can't be all that bad? Is mis-representing the characters worse?

Whats the point its just a hassle talking to plod for nothing, space it properly.

They have really clamped down on it now, you can get a fine and lose the plate.

I don't think they have, every time i go out i see at least 5 cars with illegal spacing or moving the space somewhere else or bolts/screws put somewhere to make 11 into H, etc.

if your going to get a personalised plate, go for dateless otherwise theres no point. read up on the differences of dated and dateless.

Maybe it's just Thames Valley Police then, but there is a big crackdown here and people at work or who I know have all had to get properly spaced plates.

On Road Wars some guy in an X5 had been told to change his dodgy plate already (was on a marker on the car) and they caught him again so they took the car off the road I think.

I've got a private plate that would read as basically my name if there was no space, but it works fine with a space and you just live with it.

It's far too much hassle to worry about the police cause of a silly space.

You look like an idiot with a personalised numberplate anyway... didn't stop me buying one though! Only problem is that I now need a new car to put the 11 plate on :p

TN11 ETO or T N11ETO... Doesn't make a massive difference really, it's all academic until it's on a car anyway. Interested to know the penalties.

Initially ?

Just a VDN - vehicle defect notice. Where you're required to attend an MOT station i believe (or somewhere similar) to proove you've put legal plates on it that are correctly spaced.

You'll have to have two sets anyway, because you wont pass your MOT with them illegally spaced i believe. They are now quite tight on numberplate law at MOT time.

After you've been issued 1 or 2 VDNs however, the police can get the DVLA to simply withdraw the plate. Meaning you've lost that personalized number plate and don't get a single penny back. And have to pay the costs for putting it back on its original plate.

The MOT issue won't be a problem for three years as you don't need to get new cars MOT'd.

I'd space it how you want OP. My girl friend has a LN LLL plate and spaces it LNLLL and has not been pulled over once. However she used to space it LNL LL and did get pulled a couple of times in the space of three years and 60k miles. As with most things, the trick to not get caught is not to take the ****, keep it as close to legal as possible.

I got my private plate in August 07 & wasn't happy with the plates my local autoshop made up for me as it had their advertising on the bottom, I wanted them plain. So I did some online & yeah I moved the space. Instead of XX_XXX it goes X_XXXX. This now becomes my first initial & surname, it looked good before but looks even better now.

I've never been pulled for them. I keep the correctly spaced plates in the boot with a small screwdriver just in case but whenever the police are behind me they just end up turning away somewhere else.

I've also suspect that their number plate recognition system doesn't recognise the spaces, as some people have those double decker plates, as do many bikes.

I still need to put on the correctly spaced ones for MOT, forgot last year but the mechanic I use put them on for me, he is as sound as they come.

Are you from an African tribe, x-xxxxx is rather unusual!

rather than making another thread, ill just bump this one.

If you purchase a personalised plate but want to keep your old one to put back on the car when you sell it how do you do this/how much does it cost?
