Personalised plates....

I've just got a private plate, it's as close to my name as I could get and will hide the age of my car a bit. Fairly short plate too, wanted one for ages, not fussed about the associated ponce status :D

My old Mini Cooper. :D

Mine was 250 quid, got it 14 years ago, and bar one number instead of a letter, is my first name. I don't do illegal spacing or any of that crap, so I quite like it.

My other one was a gift from an old boss for my bday, so can't complain that it's not as good a fit as the one I bought :p

If folk want them, so be it. Plenty people modify cars. This a way of having something personal on it that you get to take to the next one etc. I don't see the harm that some folk obviously seem to :) I don't think it's a status symbol though, that's just bizarre. Fine if you bought 'F1' but not if you spent 250 quid.

Is there a way of being alerted if a private plate comes up for sale through any official (or otherwise) channels?

My gf left it on her car when she traded it in about 2 years ago and it looks like it's been on 3 different cars within the last year and a bit. She's pretty gutted about losing it as it was a birthday present from years ago (yes, stupid to leave it on the car I know but we weren't together at the time and the dealer said he would "sort it out"!)

Is it just me or is it impossible to get any plates that aren't just normal regs for less than £400-500 nowadays?

I did notice that, as the one on my GTS was £799.00. It seems the old style number are a bit less but if they spell anything the price bumps up.

Sure, but the "R28" in your example, does that actually mean anything to you / spell anything?

Anything that does is far more than £250.

The plate does mean something to me as the last 3 letters are my initials and 28 was my age when I bought it.

I've never been a fan of people getting plates and having to mess around with spacing or make numbers into letters to spell their name.

I got one with the same format for £250 about a year and half ish ago.

In my case, the first part, L30 = LEO which is my name.

So they do exist, you just need to be a little imaginative or keep checking every so often.

I like mine,

Means something to me AR08 WTR, my wifes and I initials, and the day/month/year we got married.

My wife has AG07 MAP, Silver7 Mapping the name of her company.
(AG is silver on the periodic table for those figuring it out)

i don't really care what others think, they mean something to us which is all that matters :)
