Can anyone recommend a cheap pet insurance company for a dog? Anyone have one and are they worth it?

Just tried Asda pet insurance and they quoting £130 a year.

We have pet insurance for out cat and it paid out over £3000 when she was ill so i would say it was well worth it. Without it the cat would have had to have been destroyed.

I'm with directline and pay £204 a year for a jack Russell, started off at £10 a month but i think as they get older the insurance price goes up.

Ive heard bad things about Tesco pet insurance so you might want to stear clear.

We are with sainsburys and had no issues with our claim earlier this year when our dog got hit by a car. They paid no problems and even paid out £75 compensation for her death.

I'm with the post office now for our 7 year old mongrel - after years of premiums slowly creeping up we shopped around and they were the cheapest with reasonable coverage.

We get ours from Sainsburys.
Whoever you go with make sure they offer "treatment for life".
Many will stop paying for treatment for long term illness after a year, Sainsburys keep on paying for the treatment for the life of the animal.

£130 a year - make just a single claim on that policy and knowing vet bills as I do, you'll already be in profit.
Of course we hope nothing does happen to your pet.

Found Argos to be the cheapest when i was looking for mine.

Luckily I haven't had to make a claim yet, though only heard good things about them from people who had claimed.

IMO do not go with Equine & livestock or any of the other two pet insurance companies based at the same address - Thorpe Underwood Hall, York.

They are very difficult to get to pay out and put loads of obstacles in the way.

I am aware of two occasions with emergencies in the middle of night and you need permission from them first before the vet's bill gets covered and when ringing them you find out no vets are on duty that night to give permission and you have to ring back in the morning.

The problem in both cases were the animals wouldn't last till morning but without the insurance company's permission then they wouldn't pay out for the op.

In one case the animal was put to sleep and in the other the owner paid the vet's bill themselves.

Just a warning.

If the vet bill is more than the cost of the animal (in our case £0) then I'm afraid it's a trip to the big cat home in the sky.

My view too - i could have got another cat for £35 from a shelter - if it hadnd of been for the insurance it would have been a case of "errrrrrrr how much ? say your goodbyes now kids"

Make sure your vets will actually deal with the insurance company for the money and wont want you to pay for the treatment and then claim it back. That is what our vets wanted and i refused so i told them that if they didnt want to deal directly with my insurance then put the cat down as i dont have that kind of money - they gave in and dealt with the insurers which is direct line.
