Ello all,

Just doin a quick look around, looking at getting insurance for my cat.
Just wondering whos with what insurer and if theyve had any issues?
Also any issues when unfortunatley having to make a claim?

All info appreciated :)

My missus recently took out policies for our cats with More Than. Not had to claim yet so can't really comment unfortunately

We've claimed 5-figures from Sainsbury's (I think there are limits now for new members) - zero agro. Highly recommend.

EDIT - still good deal:

  • 1/3 off when you purchase a policy online up to and including 2nd May 2011
  • Up to £7,500 in vet fees cover per condition
  • 5% discount for second pet

We've had huge claims on the St Bernards, such as cruciate ligament operations, heart conditions, one had to have her ears syringed every 6months or so, she then developed cancer later on in life and before we knew that she was on very expensive drugs.
Now with the alsation just seems to the odd vet bill.
Definately worth it in our case.

Make sure that whoever you go with offer "Treatment for life".
Many will stop paying out on a condition after 12 months - not good if your cat develops something long term.

Look for Quidco offers.
We got our policy last year from Sainsbury's and got around £60 in cashbacks.

Up to £7,500 in vet fees cover per condition

Is that per year? If not, it's peanuts if your pet suffers from something serious!

My cover is £7,000 per pet per year.

That sounded like a lot when I took it out 3y ago.

Then, last summer, my labrador suffered gastric problems which the local vet couldn't diagnose and we ended up being referred to a specialist. We only saw them twice, had some ultrasounds, then some samples by endoscopy and treatment by various antibiotics and there wasn't much change from £4,500!!!

Considering that was only 2 visits to the specialist I now consider £7k per year to be insufficient cover but, of course, I'm now stuck with that insurance company as no other company would cover a pre-existing condition.

I think it's per pet per condition per year. Although I don't know as our policy limit was something like £50k pa, which we went way into half of!

We are with animal friends, non profit charity insurance. Had a good few claims as well over the years what with one cat breaking its back etc. Probably claimed over 4/5k now and they have never questioned one. We pay about £9 each cat per month.

£7k per pet? That's insane - it'd cost me well over a grand a month to insure my two cats there! I can understand that medical conditions can get very expensive, but that's crazy - insuring my household pets would cost nearly £50,000 every year with that sort of cover.

I think he means a maximum cover of £7k per pet each year.

We're with Greenbee and they charge £10 a month for a max of £10k per year..made one claim of about £100 for the cat.

Copied from there website..

Covers your pet for up to £10,000 per policy year for vet's fees, with no limit on the number of claims

Helps recover your pet if it's lost or stolen with up to £1,000 advertising costs and up to £1,000 for a reward fund

Will support you with third party liability up to £2 million
Where possible, we will pay the vet directly so you are not out of pocket

....That'd probably make more sense, yeah.

Whatever.

Shut up.

I'm with Argos Pet Insurance for my 1-year-old cats. I've got their platinum cover - £7.82 per month for my girly cat, £9.82 per month for my boy (apparently boys are more likely to stray and get in fights resulting in more expensive claims).

We've claimed for our little lady when she needed an operation and no problems at all.

Typical,

got home last night to a bloody paw.
Thought he had torn his claw out, checked and was fine.
Some cut/tear in between his toes apparantly.
Looked a bit raw so took him to vets...

15ml Cat Metacam - 16.72
4x Clavaseptim 250mg - 10.13
Minor Consult - £27.07

Was in there all of 5mins if that.

guess who hadn't gotten the insurance sorted yet :(

To be fair a lot of policies have a £50 excess - so really wouldn't have been worth a claim.

aye but if this doesn't clear up and leads to needing scans or owt of his foot insurance wouldn't pay out now he's had it looked at already no?

Agree, we have just had to claim for a cruciate ligament operation for our GSP and the first thing they did was inform us that her back legs would not be covered for anything after renewal. Disgusted with their attitude and still waiting for the cheque 6 weeks on. We would never recommend Equine & Livestock to anyone. In the small print we also found that we pay the first £75 + 35% of remainder, so a £540 claim will get us £302 take £240 for the years premiums away from that and we are left with £62. Hardly worth the effort.

Am I being heartless by not having insurance and simply thinking I'd get my cat (got two) put down if it was going to cost too much? I'd rather spend the money on my daughter than our daft animals, I love them to bits but they are simply pets.

Perhaps it's partly because we lived near a road when i was younger and cats tended to only last a couple of years.

Pet insurance simply seems a tad odd to me if I'm honest. Does it cover you for fault - so if your cat causes an accident you are covered or is it purely for treatment costs?
