Pet rats

I had a brilliant pet rat once (I had about 10 at the time). They make great pets, but some are better than others. My rat Archie would happily come everywhere with me, and used to lick people like a dog. He would also sleep under my pillow, and not once did he have any toilet related mishap (well not after a few months of being born). You can easily teach them tricks, and they do make great companions. The only issue is they don't really live long enough.

Snake food
Rats make excellent dustbins too. Left over food (especially mashed potato)? Just give it to the rats.
I think that when I have kids, as soon as they want pets I'll be picking up rats. Infact, that's the best reason I've thought of for having kids - great excuse to get some more rats.
