I'm thinking about getting a snake as a pet, and as this will be my first snake I'm doing a bit of research as to what snake will be suitable for me and other things like enclosures, food, lighting etc

I will have room for an enclosure that is about 4' long so I'll need a snake that will happily stay in an enclosure of that size when it is fully grown.

I'm guessing that there are people here that keep snakes and that could possibly advise me as to which I should look into buying.

I used to have 3 Corn Snakes and they're beautiful creatures.

jeez...been working too hard today...i read that as 3com snakes and was..."WTF?!"...nvm, i dont actually have anything useful to add to this thread, other than the fact that snakes rock :D

I was thinking of getting a corn snake and after reading various websites about snake ownership they reccomend corn snakes, king snakes and ball pythons. I was amazed to find out that the corn and king snakes live upto 20 years and the python can live upto 40 if kept correctly.

I will take a trip out to my local pet shop tomorrow and have a speak with the dude who works there.

I'd love to see pictures of snakes that people own on here :D

I've got an 2005 hatchling amelanstic (red albino) corn snake atm. She's around 24" long.

Picking up two hypomelanistc het lavender corns on wednesday.

I kept mine in a smaller plastic tank, she's moving up to a glass and wood vivarium on tuesday assuming it arrives.

She's bulked out a lot since that picture, she's onto taking weaner mice now. :)

Cool snake.

I'm hoping I can persuade my Mom to let me keep one. She can allow my sister to keep a smelly hampster in the dining room yet doesn't like the idea of me keeping a snake in my bedroom even though they are silent and have no bad smells if cleaned properly.

I went to the pet shop today and came back home with a little Corn Snake, hes about 12 inches long at the moment. I went there with the intention to buy a Royal(Ball) Python but the bloke there suggested I get a Corn first as the Royal can be a pain to feed at times which can be awkward to sort out by a first time snake owner.

For the Snake, enclosure, heating and all that I needed cost 90 quid. Ill get some pics up when I can, for those who care.

My 3 corn snakes fed differently.
One would take the food off me like a dog, one would have to strike at it so I held the mouse with a long pair of tweezers and the third had to be force fed.
I had to open its mouth up and force the mouse down its throat and then hold its mouth together so it wouldn't spew it back up.

I saw a heavily tattooed bloke walking around the local car boot sale one Sunday morning carrying a snake (I'd say it was a type of phthon). He was telling some young ladies it was "A One Eyed Trouser Snake". You can imagine their responses :)
