Petitions, what's the point?

There's currently a petitiion on change.org doing the rounds about Ian Duncan Smiths Knighthood.It's gained a lot of sigatures, but really, what's the point? I don't agree with his award but it's not as if the government will do anything based on a few hundred thousand (or even a few milllion) signatures is it!
Is it just a bit of online virtue signalling to make people feel better?

They have to consider at X Sigs and then actually talk about it if it get 100k (AFAIR) just like the TV Licence for 75+.

Do not sign if you are bothered one way or another.

In my past 30+ years I don't think I have seen a petition actually worth anything at all. I vote no, petitions just makes it so people can complain.

If only fireworks could be put in storage for a year and used in 12 months time instead.

It encourages debate and makes the issue known/discussed in the wider sphere, ergo this thread for example.

Change.org does seem fairly pointless though, you might as well do an official government one.
