Going down to Southampton and back from Oxford.... a friend is taking me there and back in an unknown car so we can party over the weekend with more friends.

How much should I offer for petrol? I might just buy her drinks instead?

Advise please :)

Offer £20....see if she's happy with that. Oxford to Southampton isn't very far really. Roughly 60 miles each way, I'd guess. Pretty much A34 followed by M3 so no "cross town driving".

Offering petrol money? Are you 17? Id never ask mates for petrol money and they wouldnt me.

It'd depend if I was going that way anyway. If I were doing them a favor and saving them from the depths of public transport then I wouldn't feel bad asking for / taking petrol money :)

It'd probably be different if I were in a position where I could call £20 "not much" - but then I think £30 jeans are overpriced, so... :o

Worthing to Southampton and back costs me about £15, probably a little less, with 2 people in the car.

Same here; left all that at sixth form. Might just buy a friend a dink though if we were going cross country.

Absolutely, if they drove i would buy them a pint to say thanks, more for the driving than the fuel costs though.

Nothing wrong in offering some money to cover the costs, what if she is short on cash its not exactly fare to epect her to pay for it all herself.

I see your point as the car would most likely be going there with or without him as a passenger, though if it was going 'out of the way' Id give some money towards petrol.

I'd do the polite thing of offering to pay for half the fuel, and buy her a drink. Working out the fuel costs only takes a few seconds.
