I never ask for petrol money, but I've never given a lift to someone who doesn't offer. I car-pool with a guy and we split the cost of it. Only polite in my book.

I just dont even think about petrol costs, neither do my friends. If we are going somewhere together then we will likely take it in turns to drive "you drove last time mate i'll drive if you want" etc.
Its the hassle of the driving more than the petrol.
